The Xbox 360 and PS3 are all maxed out

The days of the current generation of consoles are slowly dwindling down into the void. The console war, which has been raging on seemingly forever, will of course continue and will bring brand-new marketing schemes and techniques from the likes of Microsoft and Sony. The question that we have to ask ourselves is, when will their days of reigning supreme over the games industry ultimately end? The answer may surprise you…

Epic, the developers of the Gears of War series, have put this game on a four-five year time frame to be released. This is because they believe that Gears of War has “maxed out” [the XBox 360] on their games so far, and consider it impossible to create an original and unique third edition that will be up to par for a sequel of one of the best games of all time. Regarding the future of this series, Capp (Epic represantative) said, "If there were a next Gears of War, that it will be for the next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please tell me! That's about four or five years away, I think."

Uncharted III developers have in fact released information that they ... have “maxed out” the PS3 console with their latest masterpiece of development, Uncharted 2: Drake’s Fortune. This series is capable of even rivalling the Halo franchise.

Definitely interesting if these opinions of these development houses are true. This does beg the question of where the bottleneck is in the PS3 architecture.

Certainly interesting - perhaps my thought that the next gen of consoles will only pop around after 2012 is wrong... surely we won't sit at a plateau for too long.

I just saw this on myBB and thought it was interesting ;)

And it hasn't been covered from the perspective that this entire console generation has plateaued.

Both posted at EXACTLY 7:41 on mygaming and myBB....Jeez you're fast hey:eek:
:p

All maxed out? Where have I heard this before?
I wouldn't be surprised if developers pick up a trick or two as they did to produce God of War.

Um lemme see.....I have Opera, Internet Explorer,Free Download Manager, Windows Media Player and Excel 2000 open and my CPU usage went as high as 40%
Does this mean that my Core2 E8400 is getting closer to breaking out in a sweat?

Its usual developer hype to hype up their games.
With tweaking and more efficient coding one can most certainly improve games.

Naughty Dog claim they're utilising all the SPUs and have a full 25GB of data.

Firstly this whole topic should be taken with a pinch of salt. The epic statement regarding the 360 being maxed out was made in 2006 (i know cause cliffy B mentions that on the gears 1 Limited Ed bonus disc). yet they released gears 2 which looked even better so how could the 360 have been maxed out ? same with ucharted 2 ! i remember with the ps1 days in early 1997 people were specualting about tekken 3 appearing on the ps1, namco said it is impossible and would require a miracle, yet a few months lated tekken 3 got released on the ps1.

the only limitation of current gen consoles is the ram which is 512 for the ps3 and 512 + 10 for the 360 (most dev's have problems with ram limitations 95% of the time) other than that both consoles have processors that are quite on par with current top cpu's

Well I do believe that they have maxed out the PS3, but this could merely be due to piss poor programming. Refine your engine, reduce your RAM usage and hey presto! Bob's your uncle!

Thanks for that reference to GOW. Was thinking exactly the same. Dont think the exclusives are maxed out at all. Think its up to the specific developers to utilize the current platform to the max. Obviously dependant on their knowledge of it. The more they know the more they will be able to sqeez out of the platform.

I agree this happend on the PS2 as well , if anything the PS3 based on what we have so early on , should be able to do more .
and Im sure they will.

I personally dont think the 360 is maxed out yet, for they are still to bring out the engine that beats Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain hehe. Fingers Crossed mmmm
