Maplassie Reviewâ„¢
Well if you can call it one hehe.
Just going to post my findings as they happend, stuff I noticed etc.
Had some gametime from 21:00 till just now, gave me enough time to run through some things.
Firstly I used Matchmaking to find the best server for me, I selected TDM. I was thrown into a lobby with a name of players, and the message "waiting for 3 more players appeared" 2 More joined and we sat there ( I timed it) for 48 seconds waiting for the last player. As soon as the map loaded, we were greeted by "migrating host" Followed by what is NOOOOOOOT 5 seconds, Try 25.... Anycase, game back up and running, and me being on a High ping international server is evident. See what most ppl think about LAG is that they will be uber stuttery etc. Doesn't work like that. Your gameplay WILL feel smooth, it's called Antilag. But gooi a nade and you will see, there is roughly a 1-2 second delay of you clicking the button till the animation plays. That's lag.
Anycase. I decide to persevere and finish the round to see what it's like. My connection is on one red dot, while the rest of the players are 3-5 bars Green. After the map I find myself back in the lobby, during what is now called the "intermission" period. This is where you set your classes, define your tags and check your challenges etc.
SO a couple of players quit and again we are left at the screen, looking for players........
I decided to go look for another game. This time I chose Free For All. Map loaded up quickly enough, and once in I immediately checked my ping, full Green bars as was everybody around me. This made me a happy man!!!! It was all short lived though as not even 2 minutes into the map we were greeted by "migrating host" followed by "host migration failed" back in the lobby we were.
So I jumped on Teamspeak, got some Steam details of my friends, and decided we should go this route.
And this is where the game started. We formed a party of friends, and connected to ppl in our friendslist. Every single game played, ALL of us just about had full green bars in every single game we played. This worked out wonderfully and not once did we experience any troubles, even with host migration this time, happend about 3 times during the night, all 3 times sucsesfully migrating to a new host in under 10 seconds, and we were on our way again.
If you are going to play MW2 online, you will want to do it via friends, and LOCAL only. This is where a point mentioned in another thread comes in. With all the boycotting we are actually just shooting ourselves in the foot. The more local players, the more games with good connection you have to choose from, Simple as that. I personally don't like IWNET very much, but I must admit it really does work WAY better than I expected, It really does!
So all in all not to bad at all sofar, but that's if you keep to local only servers.
ON to the physical gameplay itself. My first map I played was horrible, not because of latency though hehe. You IMMEDIATELY feel the
CONSOLE in this. It's evident from the get go. The control scheme, the "feel" of the game, all the little popups when you kill players, all these little things just shouts console port at the top of its lungs. While this really put me off, as I played more I really started getting into it. The pace is frantic, games are much faster than COD4, albeit finished faster than COD4 aswell....unfortunately. Maps are over way to quick as the score limits tend to be very low. Once you settle down abit, and trust me this can take about 4-5 maps, you really start to feel right at home again. It will surely put a smile on your face or make your heart race on several occasions, as it did with me.
You'll be overwhelmed with perks, weapon upgrade, killstreak, deathstreak, callsign, title and various other choices at first, but you get used soon enough to that aswell. Another annoying thing, weapons are overly powerfull. It's like every match you play is being played in hardcore mode. No real chance of "tanking" one short burst and your dead, guaranteed. While this surely helps to drive the pace of the game, it can become annoying as it turns the game into more of a run and gun experience, allmost UT like. COD4 was allways a fast paced game, but this really takes things to a new level. Apart from IWNET, I think this is part of the decision for the smaller player counts as it would really just be pointless having that many players in generally small maps.
Graphics wise you will know you are playing COD straight off the bat. There are some new tweaks to the lighting system and some much needed physics enhancements, but its nothing revolutionary. It's actually a bit of a letdown, as it looks more like cod4 with new textures and lighting, than a supposedly "heavily tweaked" version. Lots of textures are reused, like signboards etc. Fortunately you wont really notice this to its full extent as you barely have time for sight seeing.
Sound wise what I really hate is the guns are REALLY soft. In COD4 you could hear the gunshots across the map, all the firefights happening etc, but here it's as if all the guns have silencers, or the gun volume is just way to low. This is evident even in the chopper and airstrikes. You'll be hearing alot more ambient sound and pain/death sounds than you will gunfire wich makes it rather :/
I had a lekker laugh when a Guy called in a supply drop. Supply drops are a killstreak unlock you can pick, which drops a supply crate on your mark (you get a smoke grenade upon selecting it to mark where you want it dropped) containing random killstreaks, like UAV, Sentry turrets etc. I just spawned and I saw a friendly call in a supply crate. I veer up into the sky while a chopper flies overhead, crate is dropped with a parachute and WHAM............ Crate falls the guy who called it in to death. ROFL!
Overall eventhough alot of what I say might seem negative, i'm just posting things how I experienced it. The gameplay itself is awesome once you get used to the controls and weapons, there are more maps out of the box than COD4 had which keeps things fresh.
You actually feel you accomplished something when you win a map because of the pace alone. It's like winning a 30 player Free For All match in Unreal Tournament, that's if the server is full.
Is it worth R500? Well I would say YES and NO. Given some patches to the game and IWNET itself I think the game will start showing its worth. It's really not a bad game, It is FUN, It's a Good laugh sometimes, and the amount of perks, upgrades and maps keeps things interesting. It's not perfect, but thinking about it now, I'm glad I bought it.......
Some screenshots with locally hosted matches and ping......
