Iburst

The Legendary Troll Hunter
Ok chaps i need your collective help. Telescum (Thats Telkom to the uninitiated) have screwed me big time. Applied for a new line and this morning they come with some Feb 2010 BS. Now i will go bonkers if im offline until Feb next year. So im looking at alternatives... Neotell is out so Iburst.

How well does it work for Gaming, Can i still use my Afrihost account, how much does it cost and are there any contracts involved. Im still going to push Telescum and see but i need to start making a plan b.

Any advice, alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

The line is for the Kuilsriver, Cape Town Area if someone has a contact or something i can maybe use...

Thnx.

Well what does your cell get? Because if you go with the same provider as your cell is, that's generally the signal you'll get for 3G. A bud of mine just recently got a 2nd hand modem stick thing for like R250 and he just uses top-ups as he needs it.

How much does it cost?

You've seen how easy it is to connect to the Internet. Now you can choose a bundle to get the cheapest Internet rates from Vodacom. Whether you're a Contract, Top Up or Prepaid customer, we've got a bundle for you!

As a Vodacom Contract or Top Up customer, call 082 111 free from your Vodacom cellphone or alternatively phone your Service Provider. If you're a Prepaid customer dial *111# (free) and press 'call' to buy a data bundle. You can also visit your nearest participating Vodacom outlet for the latest Internet deals.

Vodacom now offers Broadband Standard and Broadband Advanced, enabling you to choose the bundle option that is right for you, depending on your specific requirements.

Vodacom also allows data bundle carry over for up to a maximum of 60 days for all customers irrespective of the data bundle (Standard or Advanced) chosen.

Broadband Standard - all Vodacom's existing Internet rates, now standard with HSDPA 3.6 as well as HSUPA (device dependent).

I caved after 2 weeks without teh internet ........ I got the 500meg option to at least be able to surf with. Telscum ended up taking 3 and a bit months, so I was glad to have the 3G.

Well i can surf from work, that not the problem, the problem is my nice long 3 week holiday in Dec...

WTF my brother had the same problem they said last week and then this week and not 4 weeks WTF is telkoms problem....

3G is absolutely dreadful. Even in the UK, it's a joke. Don't. Just don't. It's slow, it's extremely unreliable, it's rubbish. Besides, the cost of bandwidth on 3G is extortionate.

iBurst isn't bad, but I'm not sure you realise that iBurst doesn't use your phone line - it uses a wireless infrastructure. While some ISPs are iBurst resellers (i.e. they offer iBurst packages alongside their ADSL stuff), it's probably best to go through iBurst directly.

That said, there's a bunch of stuff to consider, most important being what quality of signal reception you're going to be getting in Kuils River. If you've got anything less than 80% signal strength, don't bother. You're also going to get inherently higher latencies on wireless than fixed line. The quality of your signal also affects this dramatically. You can request an iBurst techie come around and test this for you before subscribing.

Also, there are two ways of subscribing to iBurst - signing a 24-month contract, or going month-to-month. The second option has the rather unattractive feature of coughing up for a R2000 modem upfront.

iBurst's service is okay, but if you can get a fixed line, then get a fixed line, even if you have to wait around a bit.

iBurst has 85% in Kuils River, my bro stays there.
In the meantime go without internet and SP for awhile :p
