Is it possible to "fix" earphones

I have a set of phillips in-ear earphones that I really like but the connection at the jack must have come loose because only the one side produces sound but the "silent" side makes sound when I wiggle the cable at the jack around. Now do you guys think I could take it in to a music, sound or electonics shop that will be able to cut it off and put a new jack on (3.5mm)? Btw I don't use it for gaming (getting a 5.1 set soon, heavy decision as to which one, but that might be another thread for another day) but I guess this is the section that will come closest to helping me.

Yeah dude, totally fixable if it's at the jack side. You could even get yourself a cheapo soldering iron and do it yourself. Bit fiddly, but a useful skill to have.

Look out for new connectors at large hardware stores or, of course electronic outlets. If you're in Joburg, I could recommend some, but you're better off looking at your local micas and builders warehouse.

I'm sure its the jacks side, thing is they quite nice earphones and I don't want to practice my new earphone fixing skills on them. Are there any stores that would do it? Also could you please just list those Jhb stores as I will be there in this week :)

It can be fixed, I don't know of any shop that would fix it for you though. Maybe an electronics store.

As Comet said, you could do it yourself with a soldering iron. Just find the piece of cable that's busted by wiggling, cut that section out and resolder the cables together. It will look a bit like a set of Frankenstein earphones afterwords however.

If you haven't soldered before, take it to any little tv repair shop. They'll have all the spares. The wiring is very frail and if you don't do it right - your sound quality goes for a ball of snot - not to mention possibly reversing your channels :D.

I've had to do it for quite a few people before when I used to work in one of those dodgy little shops for a measly R200/week fixing all kinds of TV's/VCR's/Hifi's/gate motors/whatnot.

Either way - they will rip you off to the degree that it's more viable to just buy a new pair from CNA. Trust me.

Maybe ask your friends if any of them can solder. It just seems such a waste to throw them away....

It is tricky working on the earphone (1/8") jacks, so maybe not for a novice.

Buy a new set, like the Roccat Vire if you like in ear head phones. The Vire's totally own the phillips earphones.
