Hey All

My boss just came to me with a problem that he is having with his personal PC at home and he says that when he switches on the PC with the screen plugged in it will not switch on at all... But when we disconnects its power and restarts the PC and waits for it to log into windows, he plugs it back in and sure enough it works... I dont understand this whether its the onboard VGA port thats faulty or its the Power unit.....

Any suggestions Welcome.

Thanks :)

i doubt its the onboard port, maybe its the screen, powersave mode features are acting up

Yeh I would assume thats the case but the fact that he has to pull its power cable out while the PC is booting up and then plug it back in when windows has started and all that.... I thought it is extremely wierd

i had a cornerstone crt that only went on when the windows boot screen came up, any other monitor allowed me to access the bios and see the pc actually post

How long has it been doing this ,
Its not unlikely that the problem is a result of a power surge (I lost my LCD this way)
Are they on separate cables or on one power cable , If it is one then chances are its a problem with the screens power unit that is looping when the signal to start the screen is sent from the PC.

Well my boss only came to me today with it but from what he said it sounds like its been doing that for the past week or so... and yeh they are on seperate cables....

Oh, I had this exact problem years ago. Turns out the PSU couldn't push the extra power needed during boot to handle both the PC and the monitor. Switching to a bigger PSU should solve the problem, although your boss could just power the monitor at the wall instead.

It's possible the PSU is failing, though. That's what was happening in my case.

Thats the thing hes using the monitor on its own power source... its very strange as I have never seen something like this before

You mean the monitor is powered at a wall socket?

Also, when he says he unplugs it during boot, does he mean the power cable or the VGA/DVI cable?

Maybe there is faulty wiring. Or it could have something to do with drivers. I had the same prob with mine a few years back and then I got new drivers and it sorted it out.

if your boss has to plug out the screen from the card you might need a new PSU ? Thats what happened to one of my old pcs..
If the screen doesnt come up when he powers up the pc ,
ask him to plug out anything and everythign he doesnt need 1st.
all the ram modules but 1 , all the drives , hard drives and cd/dvd roms ,
everything.
If the screen comes up then you have a issue with hardware inside the pc case.
Also try a diffrent screencard.

The more info you give us the more we can help you :)

I agree with Venom on this issue. It is a power looping issue. It is not a PSU problem.
It is externally powered from the socket outlet.

And i've never even heard of a screen causing a pc not to start either.

1) Change VGA/DVi if possible.
2) Change Power Cord cable(cheap 2m kettle plug connectors at any supermarket)
3) Try test on another pc and/or laptop.
