hi,
i got an HP desktop with 6GB ram and 2.5GHZ, and i switched the integrated GC with a GEforce 9800GT EE and a 550 power supply.

i have a steam account that i have my games on....and the icons on the desktop so i click on the icons and get connected and then play...

most games are ok...but sometimes, some games like Unreal Turnamnet 3 or even Left 4 dead 2 lag 'sometimes'.

i make sure nothing is open other than the game...but it sucks sometimes...and then becomes ok again....not sure why.

any ideas?
how can i make it optimal?

Is your cpu quad. If not that could be a prob. Ut3 works well on my pc here are my specs
Radoen 4800
4gigs of ram
Amd quad-core black edition 2.61ghz

So if it is just a duel that could be the prob. My friend has a duel and unreal does not go as smoothly as mine so that is All I can say.

yes, it's a quad (8300 2.5ghz).
i'd say 95% of the time, it's fine....sometimes, for short periods of time, it lags!

Do you by change have xfire installed and running while playing games?

I don't know what Xfire is so i'm gonna say no.
i think i know what the problem is though...
i connect using Steam and even though i play offline, i think somehow i'm still connected to 'something'. i have a wireless adapter for my desktop and for some reason, i lose connectivity from time to time but it tries to connect to the internet and that processing makes my game lag. it makes sense. no?

yeah makes sense since if your network is trying to connect again it will make games lag. Since you can see it easier. Try setting your ip addesses to static(type it in manualy.) Then hopefully it won't disconnect so much or else get a better wireless adapter or boost the power.

i see. I can figure out how to type it in manually (i think), but how do i figure out my ip address?

Are we talking about PC lag or internet connection lag? Its just that seeing you mention 2 online games which makes me think.

i'm not so sure i understand.
when i installed the 9800, i put in the CD and installed the new driver. right clicking on my computer -> properties, i checked the drivers installed and it said 9800 GEforce....

That's as much as i know about this...

You need to download the latest one. The one it comes with is useless and that is why your games are lagging. Drivers are optimised for latest games and so on. So the new drivers will help allot.

THat should be fine. I hope it solves the prob it should. When a game lags on my pc I just update my drivers and they work smoothly.

what do the drivers do?

ps. i just noticed your user image. from doom 1 and 2. that is awesome.

i used to play 1 and 2 back in the days with my younger sister....she used to be my 'gunner' lol
i'd say: "give me shotgun" she'd press 3. give me machine gun...lol
good times.

we knew all the cheat codes by heart...lol

YEah doom 1 lol. The drivers are like tweaks for the card. To optimise the game code with the card.
