Question about Radeon ati 5770

What's the difference between the AMD Phenom II X2 BE 3.1Ghz and the AMD Phenom II x4 BE 3.4Ghz then? Won't the x4 be lot better?

PCFormat in its
Feb issue built a DX 11 rig with rig for R6330
Here's there shopping List :
LG GH22LS50 DVDRW - R250
AMD AM3 Phenom II X2 545 3GHz - R980
Saphire Radeon HD 5750 - R1700
ASUS M4A785TD-M Evo - R1200
320GB Wesetern Digital Caviar - R500
Kingston 2x 1GB 1600 DDR3 - R800
Gigabyte Chassis - R350
PSU Coolermaster Extreme plus 500W - R550

Total R6330

Obviously you can cut on the chassis and DVD writer

And some of the tests they ran was not to shabby
1280x720 Resident Evil 5 = 72fps , Grid = 71fps, Far Cry 2= 53
1680x1050 Resident Evil 5 = 62fps , Grid = 67fps, Far Cry 2= 38

3DMArk = 12500
Unigine Heaven = 22.9

I must say they also used the Radeon HD4850 512MB card and the tests
are not far behind the 5750 1GB

1280x720 Resident Evil 5 = 75fps , Grid = 70fps, Far Cry 2= 51
1680x1050 Resident Evil 5 = 57fps , Grid = 66fps, Far Cry 2= 34

3DMArk = 12049
Unigine Heaven = 22.8

The one has quad core processors and the other is dual core. More is not always better. As Isengard said, they often dont scale properly and is therefore not worth the extra dosh.

According to the prices that Isengard provided, it looks like the X2 BE is the best option. I think I will go for that. Quad core is actually basically based on hype. In terms of raw processing power is pawns the dual core, but for gaming and graphics its better, you are also unlikely to use all the processing power, right? I know I am

Games and that don't use 4 cores yet, but what about when they do? Then I won't have to upgrade again perhaps.

Not everything uses more than 2 cores but isn't it worthwhile buying a quad anyway? A lot of games DO use it and more and more games are being developed with it in mind.

Thing is that when games are eventually all properly coded for a quad-core then todays quads probably wont cut it anyway, just like how an old Pentium dual-core doesn't cut it for todays crop of games.

AMD Phenom II x4 Quad Core 965 - Boxed CPU - 3.4Ghz Socket AM3 - Black Edition : http://xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/phenom-ii-x4-965-c3_2.html

You get two different CPU's one is C3(125watt) and the other is C2(140watt)

As for the Graphics card: Sapphire ATI Radeon Graphics Card HD4870 - 512MB 256Bit DDR5 - PCI-E
http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-...d-hd4870-512mb-256bit-ddr5-pci-e-3843586.html

Is also another place to get it from, I believe highly in take2, i bought my whole pc from them, i have a problem and they fetch and return the hardware in a few days and a little cheaper than prophecy.

I do not really feel there is a fast need to upgrade to direct x11 at this moment. These are new cards, but if you have a 8800 or even a 8600 like a previous poster, there is no need. Especially with a 17" screen as with that low resolution even the recent games will not be a problem for the 8600(obviously not running at ultimate settings) So as the guys said no need having the best GPU and bad cpu and ram, keep every thing more or less in proportion.

NB: Remember the PSU (Power supply unit) is really important, and the minimum is 500 watt, i would recommend 600+ to most users now with new GPU's, as many many times i have seen people have problems because of a under powered pc.

Lets talk processor again. Isengard stated that it's not worth getting quad at the moment, and I should rather get x2 and save a R1000. How strongly do you recommend this really? I only get to upgrade my PC like every 2 years and I'm scared it's going to fall behind. That, and I want to play today's games at max (maybe max but not ultra) - AvP, Assassins Creed 2, MW2, Mass Effect 2, stuff like that.

AMD Phenom x2 550 Black Edition would be more than good enough for 2 years.

I bought my brother an Asus HD5770 for xmas, and it runs like a beast with Dirt2

The main part of gaming is its GPU, remember all a CPU mainly does is load the game, so with a faster CPU your game will load little faster, as of yet not many games even support quad so no real use. But as you say every two years. Well as every one knows rather spend the R1000 rand now than have to upgrade next year, but i do not think its really worth a quad core. As the hard drives these days are not that fast(data transfer) so even though you got a dam good CPU its still restricted by your hdd. So even though its R1000 rand more i would say rather save that, buy a dual core and spend that on the GPU. Especially if its just a gaming pc. (Remember when upgrading the GPU to keep in mind the power supply unit)

I'm considering scaling down a bit then. What would you suggest for gaming (With a 5770)? Isengard mentioned the AMD Phenom X2 BE 3.1Ghz for R1100.

I recommend quad core, sorry I just don't see why you would rather get a dual core... It doesn't make sense to me. Since I went from an e7200@3ghz to a 965be a week or so ago everything on my computer FLIES... Games are like 2x as fast sometimes (dirt 2 especially went from around 40 to 65fps). Not only that, everything else I use the computer for is umpteen times faster. I can transcode video, work on word and do audio in and voice recognition without a hiccup. I will not go back to dual core.

I wanted to get the Phenom x4 965, but I'm now realising that everything is going to be a bit over my budget.

So I have made this for new rig:

- Asus M4A785TD-M EVO AMD 785G Motherboard R1100
- AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Processor 3.1GHz AM3 R1100
- Club 3D CGAX-57724I Radeon HD5770 16xPCIE 128-bit 1GB GDDR5 R1600
- 80GB Hard Drive R380
- Cooler Master eXtreme Power RP-550-PCAR Power Supply - 550W R650
- Cooler Master RC-310 Elite 310 Mid Tower Chassis - No PSU R310
- Samsung SH-S223C 48xCD-R / 32xCD-RW / 48xCD / 16xDVD / 22xDVD+\-R / 16xDVD+R DL / 12xDVD-R DL / 8xDVD+RW / 6xDVD-RW / 12xDVD-RAM SATA Combo Drive - Black - Retail R240
- Vantec Stealth 120mm Case Fan x3 R190
- Kingston DDR3-1625 2GB (2x1GB) HyperX Low-Latency Memory Module Kit R850
TOTAL R6420

Thoughts?

your hard drive is way way way way too small. 2 games installed and it's full lol
well unless u have more lying around somewhere that is ;)

- 80GB Hard Drive R380

lol!!!!

Ok for one your motherboard is much more expensive than you need with those specs - get a r500 mobo and you can get a better processor (and more hard drive space lol).

Additionally please just get 2x2gb ddr2800 or 1066 rather than 2x1gb of the most expensive gamer ram you can find. 4gb is better than 2gb, no matter the speed.

Thanks for the advice man, but are you sure about the motherboard? I'm just scared it's going to bottleneck the 5770

The motherboard has nothing to do with the speed of the graphics card - as long as it's pciex16. Get a decent mid-end AM2+ board with 2x2gb ddr2 ram and you'll save I guess 6-700 on the build. Then get a 500gb hdd and save up for another drive, and upgrade the cpu to a 720be. You should be good with that.

Awesome, thanks man! Helped alot :D

In that case I'll get

Jetway PA74M5 AMD 740G Motherboard w/A6 + G + L + SATA2 RAID + DVI
R560

AMD Phenom II X4 965
R2000

4gb ram ddr2-800

and 160gb hd

Whole rig comes to R6341 now. And it's a fine rig

Please push up that hard drive lol. I have tears in my bright blue eyes.

Otherwise that is a lot better, turning into a very nice rig :D
