Got my EU beta key a few days ago. Been playing a good few games every night.
I can give you some info on the current Ladder system on Battle.net 2 and my experienced so far.
When you start the beta you create a Real ID profile, basically this is to identify you along the lines of “Fayainz.mygamingâ€, it also asks for your real name which is only broadcast to other friends and from what I gather will be used to identify people cross-game (WoW, Diablo 3 etc). total speculation at this point.
It asks that you play 5 games so that battle.net can rate you and put you into one of the 5 leagues, Bronze, Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinum iirc.
This is optional, and after playing the 5 games you then have to play a further 10 games to get rated and ranked on the ladder.
There is 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 and FFA. You can also create games, join friends games, play vs the A.I in a custom game. There is ingame VOIP that is currently working also.
Once a game is completed there’s the usual stats page that we’re accustomed to, however something interesting is a new tab that shows +- the first 7 minutes of you and your opponents build order.
All achievements are currently locked, so these can’t be viewed, there are sometimes issues when finishing a game your stats are not updated.
You are able to modify your profile and select an Avatar and your preferred race. (Protoss ftw)
I have not seen any clan / team management page, but im sure this will be added before release.
The replays are auto saved at this point, and can be viewed at any time, the neat thing about the replay manager is you can now rewind time if you missed something.
Joining a game could not be simpler honestly. Bearing in mind there are limited number of beta testers at this point, you simply select the type of game you want, 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4, and then select a race or choose random race and hit start.
Typically an opponent is found in under 1 minute, the longest I’ve waited for a 1v1 is approximately 1.5min.
I do experience some graphical lag but that may be due to my PC spec’s, I’m running the game at 1920x1200 with everything on Ultra.
There is also some latency when playing with people from Europe, nothing major and it’s more than good enough, what I have not tested is playing with someone from SA.
There’s a lot of forum whining currently about newbie’s getting rushed in under 6min and totally destroyed. It’s the current trend at the moment, but I’ve played against some really good zerg and terran players and the game feels really balanced so far, no doubt there will be further tweaks but the tides of battle are changed almost every encounter.
There is one thing that has put some people off on the forums, and I’ve noticed it last night. There seems to be no way of playing with other people from different regions. When your account is made you are locked to a particular region EU or US. Much like how the WoW accounts work currently. It’s rather sad as I have friends with the beta and some are on US accounts while others are on EU. All of which are WoW players and created their battle.net accounts based on the wow servers they played on (US / EU).
All in all so far the beta is really great, for those of you who think this is Starcraft 1 with a shiney polish, it’s most definitely not. The gameplay feels the same as SC1, and the art is also similar, but under the hood there are so many new things that I’m sure everyone is going to dig about SC II.
It really has taken me back to the old days of Lanning in college with good friends battling it out over Big Game Hunter.
Hope this doesn’t make you jump on ebay and buy a ridiculously overpriced beta key!

See you ingame
