Heavy Rain Review (MyGaming)

"About the second Opinion:

Is it not true that the game offers multiple endings? We have gamers in the MyGaming forum that are playing this game for the third time already, how can you justify the claim that this game only offers 1 play through when multiple endings exist? It doesn't make sense."

My response:

"I say this because despite there being various different routes and plot forks, the endings are very similar.

Sure, players may arrive there slightly differently, but there is no real choice when it comes to your approach to gameplay. You can make different choices at certain points, and perform certain actions, but the outcome will be similar. In truth, Heavy Rain is a very linear game.

I completed it with success in all 4 story arcs, so there is no reason for me to go back.

I don't want to say anything more on this for fear of spoiling the game.

Games like Borderlands, Mass Effect 2 and even Bioshock 2 spring to mind, as they allow for a deree of creativity in terms of the player's approach to gameplay. For instance, I replayed Bioshock 2 using only the drill and plasmids, this made it a completely differnt gameplay experience the second time around.

There are no such options in Heavy Rain, only plot forks. Also, knowing the outcome of the story, as well as the identity of the Orgami killer going into the game would make it less apealing, for me, personally.

I hope that clarifies my stance on the matter."

Lets continue this discussion here rather than in the comments section.

I just finished the first scene with the FBI Agent and i must admit i fear i have figured out who the killer is already, if im right im going to be very very miffed. So for once... lets hope im wrong. Will read the review once ive finished the game, since i want to keep an open mind.

Awesome review, although I have to agree with Neo and say this game is definitely worth playing more than once. I'm on my third playthrough already and I'm still enjoying every second of it. Though I get Tinman's point about the story being very linear, there are ways in which you can affect to overall outcome of the game. During my second playthrough (even on my third one) I have played scenes which I never got in my first playthrough as a result of choices and/or mistakes I made during the first playthrough. Knowing who the killer is might make a second playthrough less appealing and what not, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the second playthrough. I still want to finish the game a few more times as I want to see all the possible endings that it has to offer.

Interesting points WLAD, maybe I am being a bit hard on this one. I will give a second playthrough a chance. Actually, we should create a Heavy Rain spoiler thread where we can openly discuss the story, twists etc. Just for those who have finished the game.

I also feel like I figured out who the killer is already and I really hope I'm wrong about this one.

Just got an e-mail from BTgames saying to NOT download any of the extra content for Heavy Rain on the PSN until the end of the week. Apparently there is better stuff coming our way next week for this title on the PSN and we should wait until then.

The main issue was with the Game Soundtrack if you bought the Limited Edition. BT contacted me yesterday and said that my code has been re-activated. I used it last night and successfully downloaded the full soundtrack this time. I also noticed the Chronicle episode size was much bigger. Can anyone comment on this?

I love the game. Every scene feels like you are in the game and your actions might make your character succeed or fail. On my first play through all my characters died lol. Playing again to get all the trophies and the other endings.

I think we're confusing liniar with open-world freedom. Heavy Rain has a tree structure and you cannot move outside that. You might say it is a collection of liniar paths. Exploring these different paths are fun, but your choices remain limited. The sense of not having many choices is made stronger by the fact that there is no open-world aspect to the game. Put it next to Fallout 3 and you feel like you are on rails. Not that that is a problem, for Heavy Rain to achieve its emotional impact it has to limit your options.

I also think that when you play it through the first time, you don't realise how different the other story archs are.

on further reflection, there certainly is a lot of replayvalue in the game. When chatting to a friend i was amazed at how different our games played out. I had to go back to check it out.

Good freaking gravy. I just finished the game. I did NOT see that ending coming at all. I guess I got the super happy ending too because it all turned out really well.
