I really enjoyed this game and I can't see what people's problem is with it. To be perfectly honest I found GoW 1 & 2 extremely boring, i didn't even bother finishing either one because I completely lost interest. DI kept me hooked for 2 playthroughs in a row and I'm eagerly awaiting the trails of St Lucia. I couldn't care less if the gameplay is a carbon copy of GoW, most (if not all) games copy something from another game. The depiction of hell in this game is awesome and I really enjoyed travelling through the 9 circles and seeing what the developers came up with for each circle. Who cares if it doesn't stick to the divine comedy? If they stayed true to the poem it would have probably ended up being one boring ass game. I take my hat off to Visceral Games for creating a really fun game and eagerly await the sequel and any future DLC.
Everyone harps on about X being a clone of Y. Okay fine, but let the damn products stand on their own merits, even if they are clones. Often they are pretty fantastic IF people just got over the whole clone thing. And besides, how many truly original ideas are really out there?
Dante Inferno destructoid's review (*metacritic score 75)
Strip away marketing and PR controversy, and forget for a moment that Dante's Inferno is a videogame interpretation of a literary classic (albeit loosely).
Sure, Visceral Games -- the talented team behind the critically acclaimed Dead Space -- has taken a bit of flak for its attempts to turn Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy into what could most easily be described as a "big-budget third-person action videogame."
But I think some people had forgotten that Visceral knows how to make fun, technically impressive games; Dante's Inferno is no exception. Despite what could be consider some "me too" gameplay, Visceral delivers one of the most surprisingly solid games I've played in quite some time.
Dante's Inferno [PlayStation 3 (reviewed), Xbox 360 (reviewed)]
Developer: Visceral Games
Publisher: Electronic Arts
To be released: February 9, 2010
MSRP: $59.99
First, let's deal with that elephant in the room -- Dante's Inferno borrows heavily from from predecessors like God of War, and similar games in the genre. There's simply no getting around it, and even bothering to try is foolish. But if you're going to wear your influences on your sleeve, you need to show and prove yourself... do it well, or do it better. In that respect, Dante's Inferno impresses, with solid third-person action that certainly feels familiar, yet throws in enough of its own tricks to make the action feel fresh and fun from start to finish.
<... snip ...>
When it comes down to it, you're going to get the best Dante's Inferno experience when you let go. Let go of the comparisons. Let go of your contempt for what it may or may not do for and to the source material. Just let go and have fun.
You're not going to find a wholly original gameplay experience with Dante's Inferno, but that doesn't mean it's not a hell of an entertaining package -- it's one that fans of action shouldn't miss.
Score: 9.0 -- Superb (9s are a hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage to what is a supreme title.)
...i would bet it's going to be one of those devil themed games you either like or don't and having a liking towards more darker/gothic/horror/shock content will be a selling point. however i think some should learn to look past zomg it's a copy of X or play comparison god
exactly what game is not repetitive? mass effects manual override... the moon patrol rides... all games have repeating sequencesMy review is my opinion of the game, simple as that. I found the story weak, the combat repetitive, and the whole experience quite lacking in either scale or purpose.
hardly a game deserving 6/10 more like 7-7.5/10. paint it anyway you like, but you guys were expecting a GoW and me2 killer and it was not because you failed to just play it for what it was imho.Necuno, you can quote other reviews to support your opinion all you like, but by that same logic I could also quote reviews that gave the game even lower scores than I did. The user score on the review page, perhaps?
And did you guys miss the part of the review where I explicitly stated that I would rate the game on its own merits (and then proceeded to do so)?
Dante a break and review his foray on its own merits. Or lack thereof.
it did read dante's inferno and not killer instinct, mortal kombat, virtua fighter or tekken, right ?Gameplay revolves around traditional weak and strong attacks from the third-person viewpoint; though the frustratingly immovable camera spends most of its time frolicking between the fourth, fifth, and eighty-seventh-person perspective. Various types of magic accompany Dante’s melee blows, but like the blocks, counters, and single-button-bashing combos, these are standard fare and nothing really spectacular to behold, let alone use against enemies.
btw holy is not just defensive, but quite offence too if applied correctly. the simple b b b holy cross combo deals shitload of damage if you maxed out it's level- it's not just there for "i think it's good for crowd control". if strung correctly together with mixing the scythe you won't have to rape the buttons to get the desired effect. you are also not forced to choose 100% evil or 100% good. you can do both paths at the same time which does actually influence the combat differently as my build was pure rage with balanced "defence" and "offence" which when it was needed i could sustain a very long rage with a lot of DPS.Various sinners encountered on Dante’s trip to the underworld can be either punished or absolved, depending on whether the player decides to follow the Holy or Unholy character development path. As per genre norm, Holy/goody-two-shoes focuses more on defensive abilities and protection, while Unholy/pretty-much-still-goody-two-shoes adds a few more offensive combos and some extra angry grunting. Neither path really affects the gameplay to any great degree, and the lack of any remarkably innovative moves or combos (apart from the effective ‘Bash Square Until Fingers Bleed’) makes choosing one or the other a matter best left to a coin toss rather than one’s moral compass.
it is a imaginative work not based on scientific proven existing places, it might seem as silly or ridiculous...seriously do you know how hell looks even if it existed?. does GoW not have different places with repeating enemies? The different Circles are varied visually and come equipped with slightly differing bad guys, although some are just way too over the top to the point of being laughable: try obese blubber demons who fling excrement, a giant, undead Cleopatra who spawns blade-wielding babies from her nipples, or gaunt she-demons who gob-smackingly spew forth tentacles from between their legs.
Some environments are equally as ridiculous, such as the excessive Greed stage with awful golden rivers, or climbing walls made up of the damned who moan monotonously as Dante traverses them. Some level-specific bosses impressed us though, such as a remarkably vile looking Cerberus, but these are ultimately let down by their kitschy, clichéd teammates.
hell not space. i found nothing wrong with the nudity- suppose some are just offended or want it "more in place" than others. this was suppose to be semi shock content and not a trip to barby land. The excessive amount of nudity in the game is just as feeble. Busty Beatrice really has no qualms about being topless almost all of the time, even during the loading screens, but none of this is ever really necessary and is tantamount to using Pamela Anderson to advertise automatic washing powder. Compared to the more mature use of sex in games like Mass Effect 2, the extra skin in Dante’s Inferno seems like it would be more at home alongside the puerile bum-wobbling in Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball or dispensed in some kinky form from a Japanese vending machine.
once again. expecting a GoW/Me2 killer will leave the experience lacking.Overall, while we’ve tried hard not to draw parallels between the respective quests of Dante and Kratos, the bottom line is that God of War does everything bigger, better, and with far more ingenuity. While Dante’s Inferno features some impressive backdrops, a very smooth framerate, and an epic premise on paper, Kratos’ journey to battle the great mythological gods captures the scale of its story’s intent far better than Dante’s excessive boobage or projectile-vomiting slob-monsters.

you guys were expecting a GoW and me2 killer and it was not because you failed to just play it for what it was imho.
how i read the review: more like a comparison with expectations of a scientific proven places with no regard that it might be a work of fantasy...

so which game is not repetitive ?I was referring to the combat being repetitive.exactly what game is not repetitive? mass effects manual override... the moon patrol rides... all games have repeating sequences![]()
and any other shooter is a clone of wolf3d ?For the second time now (third if you include the review), I reviewed the game on its own merits. Yes, I mentioned the similarity to GoW, but I certainly wouldn't knock the score down just because Dante's Inferno copied it.hardly a game deserving 6/10 more like 7-7.5/10. paint it anyway you like, but you guys were expecting a GoW and me2 killer and it was not because you failed to just play it for what it was imho.
Please show me exactly where I implied that I didn't expect the game to be a work of fantasy.how i read the review: more like a comparison with expectations of a scientific proven places with no regard that it might be a work of fantasy...
read the poem? afaik know the rivers was like that and it's their interpertation not your personal, religious or nonreligious expectations of what you think hell should be in a "non silly way". hence i said it seems that you are not expecting something imaginary but more of a factious setting. The different Circles are varied visually and come equipped with slightly differing bad guys, although some are just way too over the top to the point of being laughable:

i could easily say go and reply the game properly and you might notice that it does actually make a difference. taking for example further reach to grab the enemies and banish them helps a lot with the flying things. not to mention that 3 cross attack both deals dps with secondary effect of pushing the crowd back is good before just running head in. having the correct choices does make a difference.Yeah, thanks hardcore gamer for assuming I'm a noob and have no idea how to build a character or use combos. My point (again, read the review) was that there's no great difference between the two.btw holy is not just defensive, but quite offence too if applied correctly. the simple b b b holy cross combo deals shitload of damage if you maxed out it's level- it's not just there for "i think it's good for crowd control". if strung correctly together with mixing the scythe you won't have to rape the buttons to get the desired effect. you are also not forced to choose 100% evil or 100% good. you can do both paths at the same time which does actually influence the combat differently as my build was pure rage with balanced "defence" and "offence" which when it was needed i could sustain a very long rage with a lot of DPS.

fail to see your point. that's totally open for debate and interpretation. sounded more like you wanted like a single salvo here and there like a horror fps.And that's exactly most of the game's problem: it tries to be provocative but it comes across as feeble and forced. I like the occasional boob as much as the next guy but I found the boobage in Dante's Inferno tried too hard to give some (unnecessary) gravitas.hell not space. i found nothing wrong with the nudity- suppose some are just offended or want it "more in place" than others. this was suppose to be semi shock content and not a trip to barby land.
I find it funny too that you're quick to slam me for comparing the game to other titles, but you've used the same comparison tactic three times in one post. Ironic, much?

actually not comparing dante but rather giving you examples from your replies as to my question what is not repetitive game and for a finger back rather go to bayonetta. learn to read. much ?want finger bleed? go look at bayonettaVarious sinners encountered on Dante’s trip to the underworld can be either punished or absolved, depending on whether the player decides to follow the Holy or Unholy character development path. Either way, the review is done and I'm sticking to my OPINION, as have a lot of other reviews who mirror my sentiments. Oh, and props to Wlad for giving his opinion without condescension or whining.
sure buddy play the "grown up card" when not wanting to reply. this was hardly an attempt to provoke... commented directly on the review and the interpretation there of right there, but agree to disagree then.Disagree all you like. You're entitled to your opinion as much as you are to disagree with mine. Trying to provoke me though isn't going to get anyone very far. Be a grown-up and comment on the review ala Wlad rather than criticize the writer.
thank godOtherwise, I've said my piece about Dante's Inferno.
