The victims of PC gaming DRM: one soldier's story

There's an interesting section discussing that in the piracy article linked elsewhere around here.

If we think about this logically, firstly it is impossible to believe that even if MS and Sony decided to undermine PC gaming, that they could remotely afford to pay every single major games developer large sums of money each and every year to lock in exclusivity for each and every major game title to be released. By definition they would have to pay more to the games developers than the developers would expect to make if they released the game as a PC exclusive. If the potential sales of the PC market were as high as armchair experts and piracy advocates claim, then this would run into the tens and hundreds of millions of dollars for each and every gaming title!

Secondly, even if MS and Sony could somehow manage to bribe all of the major games company in this way, even if a games company agrees to an exclusivity contract, once that contract period expires, they should then have every reason to invest an additional sum of money into properly porting and optimizing their game title for the PC platform and then releasing it to an eager PC market, to reap the allegedly high profits which PC gaming would also bring.

i wonder how many hours you would spend developing an office packet...taking in account roughly R150-R200 p/h and then also money spend on R&D, consultancy, marketing and obviously testing too. seems you would have to pay a few persons- how much would you think it's going to cost to make something like a complete office packet ? not to forget you also would need to deploy a support team afterwards who would need pay for a few years after the product has been sold.

I am very aware of all the work they go through, and I really don't want to get into a discussion on this topic. Microsoft Office is great, but I believe that prices are unreasonable. That is just my opinion, because it's not as if they do not get a lot of sales off the product. I would have had to buy a $500 version of Microsoft Office Professional to be able to do computer studies, and frankly, I cannot afford that. And I also think that their new OS costs just a bit too much, compared to Apple, but I bought it anyways. My 2c. That's all :/

I reckon support a good product and buy their software, but when they make it impossible to use legitimately, what are you to do...

Yup that is me a smug moral sense of superiority derived from the fact that I have never pirated games or software in my entire life. Also a proper debate and discussion consists of researching a topic providing sources and links to backup your statements. That forms part of any good debate or discussion. But if reading scares you ill post pretty pictures.

B-b-b-b-b-b-busted.

Guys im not saying that Larch isn't or is a Pirate but if you think about it a lot of people also use torrent programs in order to download Patches for games and updates... its so much simpler and the servers hardly ever go down when you download straight from them... instead of using a normal download manager that you would in IE which would drop your connection if it gets too low or spikes to high... just a thought to think on

I'm pretty sure that even the most staunch anti-pirates here have pirated something, probably even recently.

I'm completely against piracy, but I'd be lying if I said I'd never copied a movie/series/mp3/application. I'm pretty sure if there were statistics for the amount of PCs with something pirated on it (even a single mp3), it'd be as high as 90%, probably higher. That would leave a few server PCs without pirated stuff on them.

Pirating a game or pirating an mp3 is all the same thing, but I think game piracy just strikes a much stronger chord with us since we realize the damage its causing to something most of us are passionate about.

Busted for what my dear Azimuth? I am sure you can enlighten all of us here what I am busted for exactly? *GASP* Could it that it is now illegal to make torrent trackers and host torrents with sensitive company data and use it to distribute it in a company network that has multiple branches and servers across the world? Go look up ThriftyTorrent its supported my companies like Oracle, Hewlett Packard, Unix. And when you consider that some of these files can be anything from 1GB up to 25GB using torrent client is the safest way due to its CRC checking capabilities which checks that the file isn't corrupt. Not to mention you can throttle its usage so it does not affect the companies network.

Guys im not saying that Larch isn't or is a Pirate

It is always better to ask then to make assumptions dont you think? Lest you pull an Voicy on yourself ^_^

Many many download managers today use a torrent style software as a legal method of downloading music you paid for online . Ever hear of ThriftyTorrent? It is a peer-to-peer method of distributing software patches or other data in an enterprise network, which aims to minimize the cost of bandwidth.

Using a torrent client is not illegal it is what you put on that client that make it illegal. And Microsoft even bought one of these legal companies and integrated their functionality into Office 2007 with the "Groove" function were you can share files and documents. Yes torrent have a bad side but there is a lot less talked about good side too.

Okay any other questions for my fan club >:3

Jesus christ. I swear, you're prepared to write a thesis about how superior you are.

Ok guys. Let's just accept it. Larch is the most awesome person ever, and being lavished with luxury he has purchased every single piece of data he has ever used. We will never be able to overcome his superiority and incredible nature. We should also strive for this. He should actually be an idol for all of us: if only more people were like him.

Fixed it for you :)

I could not agree with you more Vixe! The world truly needs more people like you. I would give you a kiss but a handshake will have to do.

Congratulations, larch. You have successfuly turned yet another thread into an ego-boosting martyr session.

How is it that you can take so much pride in being an absolute arsehole?

Fixed it for you :)

I used the word data with the intent that it covers all fields of piracy. You say nothing on your PC is pirated and never has been. Saying "data" includes music, software, games, movies and series.

Oh okay makes sense I guess. And FYI I used to download fansubs but I stopped than many moons ago, now I know better ;)

I've spoken to larch (yet again) about the nature of his posts. Let's keep the remainder of the thread on-topic, guys and gals.
