Happy Tax freedom day
Tax Freedom Day (TFD), which fell on 2 May this year, is the day on which the average South African taxpayer has earned enough money to cover this year's tax bill. This day is determined annually by the Free Market Foundation (FMF) and calculates the period (1 January to 2 May in 2010) it takes for the earnings of the average South African taxpayer to equal the total taxes they have to pay for that year.

Stated simply, up until Monday last week, you have been working for the taxman.

Of course, TFD is merely a rough guide and it is actually calculated to indicate whether government is taking more or less of our money each year and how our taxes compare to that of other countries.

SA's TFD has been creeping further and further into the year. In 2010, working people were given back eight days, probably as a result of the credit crunch.
