I remember Far Cry the same way i remember Crysis, all look no substance but that could be coz i played the console version.

That's probably why . Far Cry was quite an achievement back then, however like Crysis they can't seem to nail the final 3rd of the game and it always devolves into a linear sci-fi shooter. I spent hours just playing and replaying the Far Cry demo when it was released. Just finding different ways to tackle the mission was so much fun.

Yeah I actually have it on PC but never got past the first bit, too ugly by todays standards.

Epic managed to hit a sweet spot with Gears of War
As for Crytek they should be making Benchmarking tools instead of "Games"

It was actually the 1.3 patch I think that added SM3.0 and HDR to the game.

No doubt, PC version was way better...

ID == Tech engines you can play with.
Epic == Rival tech engines to ID you can play with.
Valve == Intelligent FSP with Story.

Some how I've always seen Valve's halflife2 engine as "Tech engines you can play with", considering all the mods (gary's mod as exmaple), and the fact they've had many developments on that engine (L4D1+2, TF2, Ep1+2, Dark messiah) and many mods - I'd actually say Valve created more of a 'Tech engines you can play with' compared to the doom3 engine.
