Red Dead Redemption Review (MyGaming)

tis what I keep hearing, actually haven't heard one bad word about it, except Omega's moans about the bugs :p

I find Mortein Target Ultra to be quite effective. Or otherwise good ol' Doom also works...

To rate a game according to developer is stupid. Rate it on it's merits and nothing else.

To those waiting for bargain bins or pre-played, don't. I might be a bit biased here as this is the 1st PS3 game I've played, but I come from a long PC history and this is truly fun. Only thing I've found is that one shouldn't should fluffy bunny rabbits or Bambi and then skin them when the wife is in the same room. Doesn't sit too well with the missus!

Sorry Omega, I am with Tinman and DenSweeP here.

It is fine to mention in a review how they may have slipped up in comparison to their previous work, but then to judge the game on that work may be very troublesome. I guess it may be fine as long as it still holds in contrast to other games within the genre, and still gets a deserving score based on those other games.

As far as the game being buggy, hmm, yeah, maybe I am a little used to it from my RPG's since they bulge with bugs sometimes. This game does have its fair share of bugs, but I sort of expect them in an open world game. They tend to be a lot harder to squelch in those titles. As long as they are not overly troublesome (I know some can be).

@Grimspoon - I am no fan of Westerns either, and well, I was very concerned about this game at first if you read any of my posts early on concerning RDR. Thing is this game is pretty damn great, sure it lacks in areas (damn all the gold :( ), but it achieves some amazing things. Certainly worth a buy for most people.

@Tinman - I am happy someone did not just score this game - 100%!!!!! This GAME ROXZ!!!1
90% is an adequate score for the game, and I approve of the review :p

I fear you are all misunderstanding me. I wouldn't judge the title solely on what the studio did before, i would compare it especially if it is the same genre. I would still judge the game on its own merits.

I agree with Tinman's score near perfectly.

It's fine to say a game isn't as good as the previous one or so and that will reflect in the score it receives, but to say that a game isn't as good as what one comes to expect of Dice, EA, Naughty etc is also OK as that will also reflect in the score, as you are actually comparing it to another title of the same genre and not the developer.

You raise an interesting question. I realize that it's a pretty tired debate, but its one I've never really had with anyone.

I think for a game to get 100% from me, it would have to:

A: Have not one gameplay element that I would change, or remove. It would also have to be near technically perfect.

B: Not have any lingering "if only they had done X", or "if only they had developed Y more" and so on.

Basically, I would have to play it, and feel as if they made the best game possible within the limitations of what is currently possible. I feel that the game which has come closest to achieving this for me in recent times is Uncharted 2. There was barely anything that I would have done differently if I could imagine an Uncharted game.

As I mentioned in the RDR review, there are a few fairly minor things that I would change if I could. The bugs are an obvious one, but so are a couple of the gameplay mechanics.

Single player is fun.

Anyone played online PS3 version yet. Cause i tried this weekend and cannot find anyone. Finding a free for all or gang match with people is impossible. Suggestions?

I want this game so badly, though chances are I'm going to have to steal it as R600 is a bit steep for now. I'm hoping that it makes me appreciate Westerns a little more... Maybe I should dig up some old Magnificent Seven episodes to get me amped... <_<

Had a bit of an altercation with my friend (and his friends), who loathe this game.

They seem to think nothing is worth doing in the game. The story is weak. The combat is dull. The characters are bland. The environment is repetitive. The mini-games, hunting, and such all serve no purpose whatsoever. They see nothing worthwhile in the game, and the more I tried to explain what I am enjoying about it the more they found things to pick on.

I don't know, maybe I am just being insecure since I am so used to finding fault in things, but this game is far from the crap they seem to think it is! Now I know that the argument - if many people love something that it must be good - does not always hold water. But this game does have merit.

After speaking with my friend I found myself playing the game suddenly with resentment, almost looking for something to dislike. So much so that I had to switch it off. Is this game shit? And we are all deluded?

Any thoughts on this?

Teh - Who cares what other people think if your enjoying it then its good - whatever the game.

I'm just glad that you do like it - especially after the way I was raving about it on the weekend.

Yeeahhhh, I'm not sure why you're letting someone else's opinion ruin a game for you.

In other news, I'm loving it. I spent most of the afternoon playing the campaign, then rocked some multiplayer this evening. Although I was all posse'd up with some friends, we spent most of the time shooting our horsies out from under each other. And then becoming completely hysterical about it. We also accidentally drove our stagecoach over a cliff.
