one of the caps on my bro's monitor popped. took it out, paid 0.59c for a new 1 (capacitors are cheap) monitor is working fine again

Yep...I've even fixed my old Nvidia GFX card like that. Replaced the caps and 6 years later it still works fine.
I used to fix tv's etc. on a daily basis way back in the day...
