Most gamers prefer disks to downloads - what's your preference?

I have no preference anymore, but the main reason I still somewhat prefer physical media is I don't have to wait days for my game to download. At this point I still only buy smallish games on Steam.

I have no real preference either. If it's a special/collectors edition then I'll get the disc. Or if it's one of those special games you have to have the hardcopy of (i.e. StarCraft2). For everything else, Steam is fine for me......... except when they want to backrupt me (i.e. the last Steam special week...... $140 spent.... :()

Just checked steam again and the peak users online was 2.4 MILLION and well could they not have done a survey on steam rather?

Even xfire got 200 thousand users online.

Lately preferring downloads, particulary through steam. It is just so convenient to buy. Plus you can back it up.
for collectors editions on big titles, I will always prefer the shiny boxes with little trinkets inside. also more maps! got a nice collection going from space, to middle earth, to gws, superheroe cities etc

I'm easy really.

I prefer disks though because I enjoy having a bookshelf filled with games it looks awesome, but steam makes life so easy that I find myself using it more and more. Also if something terrible were to happen like a fire etc. I'd lose all my physical media, but I could always just get the stuff that's stored on my account back no problem.

However if there is a collectors edition I will buy it, I love those things!

I prefer disks...because being a physical item you at least feel like you're getting something for your money...my cd collection for instance is coming close to 450....also, ever tried claiming a download from insurance? good luck with that...hence, no itunes for me...

I simply refuse to pay for a download. If you want my money, you give me something physical that I can see, hold, lick, make love to, etc.

That isnt exactly the system behind it. Its like paying for DSTV. you are paying for content rights to watch and then for satellite tranmission.

In Steams case they need to pay for bandwidth transmission from their core network plus you paying for the licence to play the game. So you are not paying for nothing.

Steam allows you to download the game as many times as you like. - items can be redownloaded. If you backed up the download (legally) to disk it can be claimed as loss of property that will cost you x amount to reclaim.

Steam (and I presume iTunes) has the ability for the customer to redownload their content free of charge.

Why would you need to? The beauty is you can just redownload it?

Yah ... I just need to echo how silly that sounds. :P

I don't believe its silly at all.

We are talking worst case scenario. I have my steam games backed up on a external connected to a laptop in the other room. This machine dies just reinstall from that.

Bought Torchlight for $5.00 during the Steam special and got the steam files from my cousin. 1 2 3 Installed. Copied it onto my N97 when I visited him two night ago.

I love the fact that with a steam licence you will actually FOREVER own the game.

I bought the Baldur's Gate saga a few years back and well... those discs are stuffed. now I cant play it anymore for old times sake even if I wanted to. - Steam also does a great job making sure older games run well on newer machines. (citation needed :P - thats just what ive found)
