How to make a living from playing games???

Im really interrested in this concept!!
Do you guys know anyone that makes a living by playing games(online gaming, game testers ect.) I know a guy that works for EA as a game tester, he has never told me how much he earns but he admits that the money is really good:confused::confused:Whatever that means!!!

Then ive also heard of online gaming teams being sponsored mad gaming rigs and pc parts, money and all sorts of other usefill things:D
Im actually a damn good gamer(not bragging) and i was ranked as number 1 on the jawug css server for more than a year ect. Ive actually won at liberty quite a few times(dota comps ect.)!! Anyway please answer my question:D?
 
Competitive gaming still has a very long way to go, especially here.

Your best bet is to go and live in Korea, where the national sport is Starcraft.

As for games testing, I cant think of anything worse.

1) You have to play through the same levels over and over again pointing out bugs and glitches. (AFAIK)

2) It would totally spoil gaming for me.
 
I don't think you will get far in SA with this idea, only if you get sponsors yourself... I think you can make money as a game reviewer, eg for NAG mag, but I don't know what the money will be like.

Maybe if you can get sponsors that can cover your living costs for a year, so that you can "train" and maybe start a clan to go play international, then it might work. :confused:

Just like in any job there will probably be good and bad parts, but I'd still rather play games for a living than anything else:D:D
 
Yeah, but maybe don't go for the usual sponsors like Intel, nvidia, EA... Maybe take a different route and go to FORD or someone like that...

Nope, you dont make a decent living from gaming at all. You win a comp and you get say R10k like at rage. Alot of cash and lekker and all but thats it for 6 months. Sponsors only give you PC's, transport, entrance fee etc (this is in SA). I've been there done that its not that great :p Go watch a movie called Frag. Its about gaming overseas. The owner of CPL still owes players money (like $5000) after a year.
Lose_Cause a top Q3 player came to Rage a few years back with Fatality. His main sponsor who paid for everything ditched him while he was in SA. So he had no flight back to US nothing.. it shows how little attention gaming gets. Except for Korea, thats just a whole nother story, okes are on chocolate bars they so famous hehe
 
Now my bubble has been burst...well if not Lan gaming what about game testers? Im sure they earn a decent living and they get to play games all day:D
 
Then you will have to leave SA, but like tinman said, you have to play the game over and over and over again to test everything and that might get a bit boring. Well, I guess it depends on how much they pay you. :p
