My new monitor: Dell U2711

So I've been in the market for a LOOONG time now looking for a really nice LCD monitor for my PC. I've been getting very frustrated with the lack of high resolution LCD monitors and really struggled to get a monitor that delivers a higher resolution than 1920x1200. In the past, most monitors capable of the mythical 2560x1600 were 30" monsters, costing an arm and a leg, and not suitable for gaming AT ALL - so naturally they were not good choices.

Then the other day, whilst looking for an iPad in our 3rd World country, I walked into the iStore at Clearwater mall and saw a breathtakingly beautiful LCD monitor. It was the new iMAC 27" (costing R23,000). I was blown away with the image clarity and vibrant colors of the monitor. I desperately had to get this monitor in my life!

Through some research I learned that it was almost impossible to use the iMAC's display on a Windows based PC. So my dreams were pretty much gone at that point thanks to the whole displayPort technology that they used.

On Monday this week I continued browsing the web and came across an article on one of Dell's new monitors. It was a 27" LCD monitor using an IPS panel and supported the same resolution that the iMAC's display does - 2560x1440.

Some more homework on the product was done and I discovered it's the exact same panel used in the iMAC's display, but it does not use LED backlighting like the iMAC does and still uses CCFL - apparently this turned out to be GOOD news because the LED's on the iMACs were causing problems which resulted in a yellowish tint - something that will be avoided on my monitor thanks to the CCFL lighting.

Also, using CCFL backlighting provides a higher color gamut than the LED version!

So this is the same display that the iMAC uses with its breathtaking colors and super crispness, but at a fraction of the price with slightly improved performance.

I CANNOT WAIT!

**UPDATE**

Okay so all the reading that I've done online states that this is THE monitor to own if your budget allows for it (even in my case where my budget didn't. oh well). The only issue is that Dell has a pretty notorious reputation for being pretty bad when it comes to customer service and when ordering stuff from them, it can take WAY longer to arrive than the stated 14-day waiting period. So - if by next month this time (22/08/2010) I don't have any news on the monitor yet, you'll know I'm a very sad (and de-moer-in) Panda.

You wont regret purchasing an IPS panel LCD thats for sure :) The Dell's really are amazing and they've come along way.

You could get a 32" LCD TV for that price and a damn good one too :)
All though that mayyy cause some desk clutter :)

Yep those dell screens are amazing. Wish we got the Dell TV's at us prices. 73" Full HD screen goes for $1300 in the USA :/

I have a 32" LCD Full HD Samsung on the desk next to me in my room at home - it's used for my wife's XBOX. It has NOTHING on this Dell monitor.

This is an IPS panel with a huge res - the image quality destroys that of any "full hd" television that you want to compare it with :)

Basically it's like saying "for that lamborghini you could buy 9 Opel Corsas" yeah you could - but it's not the same thing at all.

Oh my sack that is a good price! Thats like just under R11000 if you convert it at R8. WOW

If you want to start crying - go look at what some cars cost in the UK and in Australia and then convert the price to Rands - then spend the next 30 sleepless nights trying to figure out why we're paying almost 4 times more than the rest of the world for the same stuff!

Most of the cars overseas dont come with service plans! that is why they are cheaper. I have lived in the US and in the UK. BMW SA has the best service plan in the world. Did you know that?

Look don't get me wrong, that is one lickable piece of equipment. But r7,500... Yeah. Anyways enjoy it mate.

Do you really think it's a lot for a higher end PC monitor? I remember when the Samsung T260 first came out it was flippen expensive R4500 (if I remember right). That's for a 25.5" TN panel LCD monitor capable of 1920x1200. The monitor I'm buying now is a brand new IPS panel capable of a much higher resolution and it's 27"....for R7100 - I don't think it's a bad price at all!

Another thing which peeves me about this whole issue is that, coming back to the NAG Dream Machine, THIS monitor (the Dell) is a prime example of what should be in the Dream Machine - instead they're trying to make local gamers think that low res monitors are acceptable for PC gaming. Thank goodness for the internets.

I hear you :) I have probably got the same 32" Samsung LCD, the 5 Series?
As nice as it is my Dell 2407 is streaks ahead in color and sharpness over the LCD. It all depends some people think size is everything (lol)

I wish we got all the technology here at US prices...then the Mac's might even be abit cheaper aswell...but yea, at least we have the technology available here now.. Just wish we could buy mustangs here...hehe

Mustang GT in the US I want +- R250 000 ...then if I wanted to import it... all the tax and extra cost would be 70% extra on the total cost... so would pay around R500 000 to import... and then might have to convert the the left hand drive to right hand drive, who knows for how much extra..
