WoW's 9 biggest shortcomings

bwahaha...brilliant...a couple of spelling mistakes and a few words missing here and there but overall a good read.

Good read. It is some of those 9 shortcomings that got me bored enough of the game to stop playing. That and the fact that all my mates moved servers and I couldn't have been bothered to get another character to 70.

I do wonder if they're next MMO has any chance of generating the same or even close to the following that WoW has received.

I must say that I disagree with the first point. It's not WoW's fault that players are rushing through the game. I see absolutely nothing wrong with a large number of quests being available. Personally I take my time doing them and read all quest text in order to add to the experience. I've enjoyed WoW much more by doing that than rushing through them without thinking twice as to why I'm doing what I've been asked to. Point 2 also goes hand in hand with what I've said. You can't blame the game for the actions of those playing it in the majority of cases (and this is one of them). Long quest text shows that they've made an effort to make quests interesting for those who decide to read them.

I also disagree with points 3 and 4. Games may not be books, but why can't they read like them? When I play an RPG, I play it for the storyline and general fun factor. If an RPG has a long storyline then why exactly is that a bad thing? That just means that I will get more enjoyment out of it. With regards to point 4, I find that rather funny. Essentially that would be calling for WoW to be further simplified. WoW is not a rubix cube for goodness sake.

I agree with point 5. Having to return to areas to complete quests you were too low a level for is frustrating. However, I once again disagree with point 6. Why would anyone in their right mind want to remove variety from the game? One doesn't have to do all quests, but the large majority consist of collect X amount of Y. Quests that are different add some incentive to keep playing. Guild Wars, for example, has barely a single collect X of Y quest in existence. Thinking that that is what quests consist of is a primitive gaming mindset.

Point 7 I don't really see as a huge shortcoming. If that's one of the game's biggest issues according to him then eish...it doesn't really have many.

AMEN to point 8.

Point 9 is very true...I've always wondered about that too.

I see your point of view, but I do think the story line or the game in general should have come out with a bit more direction.

Variety is good, there is no doubt about that. A long story line is also good in an RPG, but I do think there was a general lack of direction with the quests. I also got frustrated at times that I had 25 active quests and couldn't pick up any more but I didn't really want to get rid of any quests either. I didn't want to waste the older quests because they were quests I couldn't complete on my own or I needed to level up before returning to an area.

After some time this started to disburse me from the original route I was taking and ended up just doing random quests because someone was offering and they were at my level, rather than following a course and chain properly.

Don't get me wrong, I still love WoW but it has its shortcomings.

Thats pretty hard to achieve in an MMO when back in 2004 (?) the devs didn't know where the story line would lead.. Its nothing like designing a storyline for Warcraft 4 where its linear. Patch 1.7 was ZG, 1.9 was AQ (iirc), 1.11 was Naxx then TBC rolled around. Each 'interval' could have lead on to become the main focus of Vanilla

I think that many issues could be addressed if they'd simply up the current active quest limit to say 50 from 25. Having a limit is rather silly in the first place.

Well considering that Kaplan is currently working on Blizzard's next MMO, his complaints should give a decent insight into what we can expect

And more importantly - making it public would mean that the SW:The old republic devs take notice of it!

My rogue bounty hunter , darth fader, is going to pwn!

I doubt they'd significantly change the game this far into development. We all know what happens when you do that (Tabula Rasa :().

Exactly. And because he has outlined those issues, those are surely things we will see with a lot of changes in the next MMO. I have no doubt that Blizzard will make another masterpiece, as they do so time and time again.

OK FINE. Replace it with any other game still in dev:

- Stargate Worlds,
- Guild Wars II
- whatnot

An awesome article, I must say. He brings up good points. Especially that damn quest. "I'm the asshole who made that quest"

I like this man. This is a respectable man.

Guild Wars, for example, has barely a single collect X of Y quest in existence.
Guild Wars has a few such quests, luckily not close to the majority of their quests, which is good... since
I freaking HATE such quests... Collect 25 pieces of Drift Wood for the quest "You suck balls", stick it in your eyes and return to me for your reward of "Roflpwnd".
Good, do it 10 more times for The Voodoo lady quest.

meh

Hehe, I can remember around 5 of such quests at most and even then drop rates were 100%.

You are mistaken - drop rates are not all 100%. From the top of my head...
Feast of Bokka (containing 3 sub portions) is one and Sticks and Stones is another.

Man, I hate these. It's good there are not many of them.

I would believe this Kaplan dude, he was the lead so he would (should) be in touch with player complaints / gripes, more than any other person would be anyway. A single player can easily disagree with what he is saying since the player is raising his own opinion and speaking for himself. Kaplan is representing the majority of players.

That's how I see it, at least.
