StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Review (MyGaming)

Was a bit worried and was always a bigger WC fan. I was super pissed off with no LAN and having a dodgy wireless connection, and 3 instalments at R500 a piece to bend for...almost wrote it off...But wow they did a great job....so polished. GOTY for sure, unless they sneak D3 in before year end.

I would've rated it a little closer to 100%, like 101% ;)

Its not that good...the lack of LAN, single race campaign (apart from short protoss section) and low quality (visually) cut scenes reduce my personal rating to 90%. The campaign ends rather un-epically too. I would have preferred a bigger buildup. The missions in general were amazing though. Online multiplayer is just amazing and is the reason most people buy the game anyways.

Okay...LAN is overrated. The netcode in this game is fantastic and people need to come to terms with the fact that LAN support in games are a thing of the past. Move on. The visuals in the game are amazing. They're DirectX 9 but blow most of the DX10 games out of the water. Not only does it look fantastic but it also runs great on almost any recent system.

There are some bugs with the game, but graphics and LAN are hardly reasons to complain about.

Supreme Commander would like a word with you...

:p

Thanks for such a great review its really inspiring for players and especially me a 3 days old SC2 gamer (I just got my copy last weekend), I really really found the whole SC2 campaign entertaining, excellent cinematography and audio and the greatest real-time strategy game of all time.

I gotta say that B.net is really the best online game management system I've ever seen, it's simple and fast to get started, my only single beef with it is the irritating password rules (If I wanna use a statistically poor password, isn't that my risk, not yours?) and the lack of LAN support.

The story really is great, but as many know, it does absolutely screw-all to prepare for the MP or even skirmish. In the singleplayer atleast I loved the return of all the classic SC1 units which I thought I'de miss, units like Wraiths and Goliaths.

Cutscenes, like those on the Hyperion and so on I'de have prefered to see pre-rendered in higher resolutions, but there still not at all bad, in game graphics is the also the perfect balance of being shiny-shiny and retaining preformance, if only more games can follow that line of thought.

I think SC2 single player is a good game but that it is horribly over-rated.

The storyline is a direct rip-off of Mass Effect. The characters are unlikable - his own crew can't even sympathise with him for most of the game so how is the player supposed to? His obsession with Kerrigan seems like it was written by a twelve year old complete with how a twelve year old believes love should be.

The missions try a bit hard. The end result are heavily scripted and the Terrazine and Supernova missions are to of the most obnoxious, frustrating examples of level building I've ever played. The fact is that the missions are still the standard collection of base defence, hero and base building despite all of Blizzard's best efforts.

Also, on larger monitors the limited zoom is just ridiculous. I can understand it in multiplayer so that people with larger monitors don't have an unfair advantage but it doesn't work in single player.

The fact is that SC2 is a game stuck in the 90's with liberal amounts of polish applied.

I'd give it a solid 80%

Edit: And for R500.00 Blizzard couldn't even give us a manual with tech treees and unit information? What a rip off.

The game is "stuck in the 90's with liberal amounts of polish applied" because that was sorta the whole point, a shinier version of the original game, not an entirely different game with an old name, Blizzard isn't EA.

I know a lot of guys that want to LAN against another but not online cause of not having access to the net.Let's see what's gonna happen..........:p

In what way is the Starcraft storyline similar to ME2?

SPOILERS AHEAD:

The whole dormant race of Gods/Creators returming to destroy the universe and only The Chosen One can stop them.

I suspect that was crammed in via the Protoss missions at the last minute. Their focus group probably showed that otherwise nobody would care about saving Kerrigan otherwise, let alone have Tychus killed to save her. At this point she was just another foozel to most gamers.
