Okaaaaaaay...

Moving swiftly along.

So this new carbon emissions tax on vehicles is turning out to be a real pain in the ass (and wallet). I was gonna get my car next month, and I arranged the delivery date and alles, only to get a call not 4 hours later from the salesguy reminding me of the tax which comes into effect on 1 September. Which will add R7800 to the financed cost of the vehicle. Nice.

So to cut a long story short, I thought I had more than a month to finish organising insurance, finance (pre-approved and whatnot, so no real worries there), tracker etc. I now have slightly under two weeks to get it all sorted, before taking delivery at the end of this month. Added to my workload at the office atm, and it's making the stress levels a bit much. Still, crazy excited for the new car :D

Oh well, good party tomorrow to get the alcohol into my system, and all will be good again!

PS.
If you guys wanna cybersex0r, PM's are there for a reason? :D

PPS.
This spare pump is better than the one I had in my pc. Dropped my temps like 10C at idle, and 15-20C under load o.O

Heya orb!

My insurance went up by a whopping R10 after I canceled my tracker on my car. Go figure. If you got your car at a good price it's worth having one, but mine's 4 years old now and in all honesty, if someone steals it and fscks up the locks and windows and steering wheel and revs the engine in its moer in then I actually don't even want the car back.

A guy I know had his renault stolen not too long ago. They recovered it, but the engine seized because the bastards didn't know how to change gears so they drove it away in first all the way.

As for this whole emissions taxing. It's a whole crock of shit!

I know for a fact that my work's 3L diesel Fortuner has better fuel economy than certain 2L cars out there. And besides, if I drive my SUV to work and back which is 7mins away and you drive your citi golf 60km every day in jhb stop-start traffic, who is emitting more gasses?

The whole thing (as it is already) should be taxed on petrol usage. So the more you drive (and thus emit fumes) the more you pay, instead of just blanket taxing your vehicle's potential to emit.

Why nobody's contested this, I wouldn't know.

Completely agree with you RE: emissions tax. Complete bullshit. Simply another tax on people who are essentially supporting a third of the country's populace...

As to the tracker, well whilst it does barely reduce the premium, it's a requirement of obtaining comprehensive (or any, really) insurance. And since all financed vehicles need comprehensive insurance, you consequently need a tracker on the vehicle. I do hear what you're saying w.r.t. to not really wanting to get it back after it's stolen, but if it's recovered in a state like that Renault, the cost of the repairs actually leads to a write-off of the vehicle in question, which in turn results in a new car.

As to the price on my car, it's cost + 5%, so the difference between what I'm paying and the insured value is around R20k...

@ Miss PB - which metal gig was this?

Orb, that's quite odd. I've been with santam and outsurance and both gave me very little discount on my premium if I have a tracker in my car. Like I said ... outsurance gave me R10 off if I have one installed, with the promise that my tacker premium could be halved if I am an OS customer, but then I'd have to sign a 3 year contract on that.

I hear what you're saying, but perhaps we're talking at cross purposes here? I agree that the premium reduction is stuffall if you get a tracker, but the fact of the matter is, the bank/insurance firm will not allow me to purchase the vehicle without installing one. So yeah, not much choice in getting one. I'm going for a fairly fancy one, since it will allow me to track my mileage for tax purposes. I'll still keep a logbook though...
