Referring to single player fps type games mostly for this: If a game gets too repetitive or rehashed then I stop playing.
Story has to be enticing and actually go somewhere. I am incredibly fussy when it comes to actually finishing a game, there are only a handful I have actually played right through to the end. Others have only gotten 1/4 or 1/2 or even 3/4 way in.
There are a few exceptions which I have replayed (mass effect, borderlands, fallout)
The story has keep me going to the end wanting to see what happens, gameplay has to be challenging (not ridicouslousy difficult), gameplay needs to be a bit different and not just shooting over and over with a different backdrop. Throw in a few puzzle type efforts, hell even a sequence to activate certain things, something to make you feel more immersed into the game. I have to feel like I am playing that character's story and details in the world make a huge difference. If it feels empty and linear - not interested.
