I think I may be getting to the bottom of my adsl connectivity issue.
I notified my ISP that my connection was still dropping sporadically
and got the following response:

"...have investigated your service from our end and do see that the line is intermittently dropping your ADSL connection which is causing you these connection issues. I have reported the line to Telkom to further investigate....
Please contact us after 48 hours for a progress update on your fault if you have not received any updates from Telkom at that stage."

I hope that the telkom technician who investigates this knows what he is doing.
