Movie/Series downloaders vs Game/software piraters

I've gathered over time now that there are many users here on these forums who state that game piraters are the scum of the earth etc etc. But almost all the users here are people that regularly download or copy from mates, shows/movies and watch them.

I ask this, what is the difference?

one you have to watch, the other you have to play.

No difference. If you download a movie it is the same as downloading (pirating) a game. Behalwe die skeinheiliges sal nie saamstem.

Hmmm. See I take it like this. TV series are "free" (pay your tv license it's the right thing to do :p ) to watch when they air on TV. I pay DSTV subscription, I pay my TV license, I don't feel I am in the wrong downloading series that actually DO show on TV since I pay for it in anycase, it only shows much later. Sounds like a pirate justifying himself, but that's how I see it in anycase. They license the shows, so with me paying them subscription, I can't see how I am really in the wrong by downloading them.

Now Games on the other hand, is a different story. By pirating games you basically enjoy a product without paying a cent (bandwidth excluded) , whereby the developer / publisher does not benefit in any way. That in my eyes is wrong. I know it somewhat contradicts my statement about movies / series as I pay Multichoice / SABC for a subscription fee, and they in turn pay the distributers of the said movies and series, so it's a grey area but I don't feel the slightest bit bad about it.

I don't see it that way. I pirate series, movies, music and games. Not even going to try and defend myself. I know it's wrong.

At the moment i have a few pirated games on my pc and lots of movies and series.

I do pay for 90% of my games BUT i still am a pirate. Even if you rip a music cd that you "own", it is still illegal.

Dis baie waar oom Jack. I won't deny it myself. I own tons of movies and Series, and especially music. about 99% of us do but will never admit to that. It's become such a norm in today's times. I actually remember having friends while growing up that refused to play copied games, or copy a game for you, same with music and vhs tape movies. Ppl actually still cared then :)

Necuno, smart ass! :p ps, to play it you also need to watch it... :D

I agree in part with Mappie, but why then are you charged for Blu-Rays or DVD's etc? If they are "free" and have been on or will be on TV soon, then why charge me? Yes, I know about manufacturing costs, but they are charging you mainly for the content. The difference is that you now technically own those .mkv's and .avi's and to own something you need to pay for it.

Den, you don't really "own" the product you buy. Stupid but true cause if you read the fineprint, you may not make a backup for yourself.

My old xbox had a tendency to eat discs. I lost 2 Forza 3 disks. R1400 down the drain. I thrashed the xbox, bought a new 1 and made a backup of Forza. M$ het net hulle skouertjies opgetrek en gese ek moet dit instuur.

Mine is mostly Music, I own 400+ legit DVD titles. My wife is a serries fan so she gets stuff from her friends that she watchs. Most of the Movies ive pirated i now own legaly. I mean I downloaded the Harry Potter Audiobooks the other day, I own the novels but dont get a chance to sit down and read them, now i play them while i work. Same with the latest Iron Maiden Album, figured Id buy it till i saw the pricetag, R300 for a CD, In-fucking-sane!

I have one rule though... i dont pirate games.

Ok so what about the few of us who dls series or music and the go out to buy the originals? Only reason I dl a few series is because they dont air in SA, but once the boxset for the season becomes available I make a plan to get it.

Ek is voorheen as hondbollie uitgemaak omdat ek erken het ek pirate. LOL en almal maar almal pirate. Ask anyone on this forum if they have just 1 MP3 file. That is piracy my friends.

Doesn't matter if you "own" thousands of legal games/software, movies etc.

The games i have on my pc that is pirated is all SP games with useless or no MP. All the others are MP games which i enjoy with my online friends (even if they kick my arse - like mappie)

I love steam and with uncapped downloading through steam is a dream.

i get more flicks/series than games. games i might do when i really just can't get it or still undecided after the demo. all my games anyways that i downloaded and liked i bought, even if it meant getting 2x copies one for me and my partner.

some flicks like for example ARN in swedish i doubt we will see here locally and only way is the torrent way and well series/anime must be only ones i really don't buy, but rather just download and watch. lastly we do or did mp3's, i've only recently started collecting the actual albums i like as i can.

in the end i would rather download series/movies than buying them like i do with my games. i suppose this might change when i get a decent setup to watch my flicks/series, then it might become pointless to just go on rips.
