League of Legends cleans up at GDC Online awards

He is what I dont get... Why is a game that is basically a clone of a Mod getting such acclaim? I mean surely there are original ideas out there that could be praised. I mean hasn't this been done before? (HoN?) I really dont understand this.

I would say that Aeon of Strife style games (LoL, HoN) are one of the newest and most original genre's in gaming. They also aren't being praised for being completely original, but for specific areas of online game design and community management.

Practically every game can be pigeonholed into a genre, and if the criteria for issuing awards in design was 'this idea can't have been done before' then nobody would be getting an award, except perhaps for that guy who came up with the MUD concept.

It's more about recognizing excellence in existing online gaming fields, and recognizing those games that push the envelope of genre's, paving the way and providing and example for better online games.

Makes Sense I guess.

S2's five step strategy plan:

1. Let LoL spam the web with their advertising.
2. Let LoL win all the awards.
3. Let LoL players LoL for a while so they get acquainted with the genre. Let them listen to endless references of HoN.
4. Steal the ex-LoL players who want something that's actually balanced and has depth.
5. Profit.
