What's your take on them though? Or are you not at liberty to discuss it? Since we're on the topic...how does the adspace work? Do you scrutinize those who want to place ads or does it go to the top dollar normally?

Here is a simple example showing how the bidding works. And there is no time limit to when the bidding stops since a new bid increases the countdown by a further 10 seconds.
Current Price: R0.50
Last bidder: MrY
Bid cost: 1.00 credits
Winner savings:
Retail Price: R250.00
Current Price: -R0.50
10 bids: -R50.00 (The number of times the bidder bid therefore losing R50 (10 bids)by bidding on this item)
Savings: R199.50
Shipping Cost: R0.00
The final price gives an indication of how much Smokoo made on that particular item. (take the amount in cents and multiply it by R5 to give you the gross income)

Precisely. Calling it an auction is false advertising. Plain and simple. An auction implies that if I bid R5 and Voicy bids R6, he wins and pays his R6 and i pay nothing, as I lost the bid. These guys still make the losers pay either way, which makes it more a gamble than a bid.

Well, there are a few angles.
On one hand, there is no evidence that they are doing anything illegal. On the other hand, I personally think they are very sneaky and misleading. There is also the possibility that they are running bidding bots, which would be reprehensible, but is obviously a big accusation that is difficult to prove.
At the end of the day, people should be careful with their money on the internet, and all you have to do to see through these guys is watch an item in its final seconds of bidding (which often stretch into hours).
Would I recommend them to a friend? No.
As for add space, we usually have long term campaigns from local game distributors. One such campaign has currently lapsed and is being renegotiated. In the interim, there is some free space in that particular slot. I was not involved in this campaign, but I know that we were approached by an agency to run banners for this site. The site checked out from a legal perspective, and from there, we don't really have the room to discern. Unfortunately, in this business you can't be too picky about who advertises with you. Unless you guys want to start paying a monthly subscription fee
We obviously do prefer to have cooler brands being brandished across the site, and we usually do have pretty nice banners, I think. Having said all that, we will be having an internal meeting to discuss whether to continue with the Smokoo campaign.

Report it to the Competition Commission or whoever it needs to be reported to.
In the meantime, I'm fairly certain they are paying their bills to MyGaming and thus have the right to be here and make this site possible. As for MyGaming choose not to accept them as paying customer, i cannot blame them for not turning them away, because lets be honest, business is scarce and you need to earn where you can.
