Cell C Data Bundles

Hi Guys,

I thinking of getting internet at my girl-friends place, and been looking at the Cell C Data Bundles. Now I would prefer to get an ADSL Line, but she may be moving out of her place soon, so don't want to be a fixed line.

Now my questions:

1st off, has anyway had any experience with these packages?

2nd: My main purpose is to connect to xbox live.... I assume this is possible? But how? I Normally use an ADSL router so its as simple as plugging it in. But I assume the dongle plugs into a PC ... how would an xbox on the same network fit into this. Also not sure if this makes a difference but there are two xboxs on the network.

Unless you get one of those fancy wireless routers that can actually take SIM cards and/or USB modems, the old buccaneer way of doing it would be to run the application on a PC where the data modem is connected to, then turn internet connection sharing on using that connection and plug your XBOX in the PC.

Data Modem > Windows based PC > internet connection sharing on the 3G connection > shared towards the ethernet port of the windows based pc > connected to the XBOX using an ethernet cable.

Tada.

Before I got ADSL I would buy a data package from vodacom.

I played COD4 online via 3G, and thats how I got hooked :P. So if you are wondering, 3G isnt too bad for games, you get the occasional ping spike but its not too horrible.

As for connecting to your xbox I have no clue how to do that

Just a bit to add on 3G, I have Telkom 3G, playing BFBC2 is fine..but FIFA 10 seems to lag a bit on EA servers...(PSN)

Update, if anyone comes across this. It works perfectly. I live in Somerset West, if that matters, and get decent connection speeds. Nothing like 20mb/s, but generally faster than 6mb/s. Had a lan, 6 of us played WoW online, was awesome. Played Halo: Reach with two people also, worked amazingly. Had some good fights in the Halo arena. Latency is much the same if not slightly better.

My setup: i bought a Netgear Router, pretty simple to use. (You will need to download the firmware update for it to work). Once you download the firmware you have option in the router settings for South Africa and cell C. Once you select them its a matter of plugging in the dongle into the router and it connects... Pretty damn simple.

Got myself online thanks to Wlad. Uncharted 2 work lagfree after about 600mb of updates. Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 has give or take a 1 second lag. Oh yeah and Demon's Souls works fine aswell

3G can absolutely work for online gaming, albeit an expensive alternative (gigs are costly).

Thing is it can be erratic, and while some may get amazing stability others will be mired in frustration with erratic speeds. For me personally it worked well for ages, but lately I have been experiencing issues.

I am on Vodacom here, and hope to try Cell C as soon as they arrive in JHB.

The cool thing about the Cell C package is, after you buy your cell c usb dongle thingy, you can buy another sim card alone for R1000, which gives you another 24 Gig (2 Gig monthly ofcoarse), which works out about R42 a gig.

Nice! Yeah been reading that Cell C are really managing pricing well. Too bad it will take some time before they are in my area...

Right now Vodacom are terrible it seems largely because of their upgrading. Moving over to MTN for now.

The Cell C data bundles are really cheap for 3G it works out R124.97 i think a month i pay R389 for 2 gig from vodacom now, I'm thinking of getting the Cell C data now because it's only for a limited time :(

Planning to try normal Cell C 3G if I can get it here. Too bad their super fast network is not in place in JHB yet from what I can see. Vodacom and their upgrades are causing havoc with my connections. That and for some reason my signal is steadily decreasing :(

But NO contracts for me thanks! I like freedom of choice, and when one sucks I just switch out a sim-card and check the others.
