As per topic title. Do any of you guys/girls know when we're supposed to get the Apple iPad in South Africa? I was under the impression it was supposed to launch in September but it's still nowhere to be found :(

Not Sure but its retailing at bout R9K when it does land. I might pick one up Dec when i go to europe since its R3K cheaper there for the Wifi 65Gig model.

R9000? Geesh, for which model? Hopefully not the 16GB model because that would be a ripoff!

I dunno which Model, since the SA Apple Store doesn't even have it listed. Thing that is currently making me second guess my decision is that there are bound to be an influx of Slate devices soon. HP are working on one, as is Google and Samsung's Galaxy Tab is also due out soon. The Ipad also has a few glaring shortcomings, no flash support, Itunes (shudders) and no camera. I love the Idea of the Ipad but dunno if i should wait and see what my beloved google brings to the party or if i should, for once, bite the bullet and go with apple.

Wait for the 2nd generation one IMHO. R50 says it'll have the Retina display and no doubt some other goodies.

Setup two Ipad's that we purchased for the office the other day (from the states ofc). Must say I wasn't overly impressed and finding it very hard to justify that kind of money for a big Ipod :( Don't hate me, thats my opinion :D

Could you expand on that a bit?

Precisely. Look, it looks nice and all that, but I can't help but feel it's a massive Iphone, without the phone part. What does it offer that a Iphone doesn't, other than screen size and all things attributable to size?

Little, really. Wanna know what sold it for me....

I love comics but they are hard to find in SA and when you do find them what do you do with 20 000 comic books? Even regular books, I love reading but they take up so much space. The idea of sitting on the couch or in bed with one of these:

and read, as if reading a book is awesome.

Im keeping an open mind and if google or HP lauch a similar device pre-xmas I will rather look into one of them.

Spending R6000+ to read a comic??? Dude, that is utterly insane!! I'd rather buy the comics. Who knows, maybe you will get one of those that in 40 years is worth like a million bucks. In 40 years yr Ipad will be the thing underneath the dog house keeping it level.

Not just to read comics...

can't wait to get a tablet, but waiting for the android versions to release first before make any decision.
not only cause they will be cheaper but for other reasons.

The ipad looks the best so far, it really does look good but the price is eina.
I'm not a fan of apple and I didn't really like my touch all that much and having to use the software.

It's definitely in SA. CEO of Bidvest Bank just got one lol. Was sitting in a meeting with the head of IT, when he gets called away by the CEO for a few minutes and comes back with the iPad. Had to set it up for the boss :p

Dunno what he paid for it though. Not sure the price was a consideration, either.

I was thinking the same thing, as I am also not a Apple fan, but my biggest fear is that it will take Android devices, even Google's own one, at least 1 generation to get to where Apple is in way of deals with publications and such. Apple is, as with ipods, setting a trend. Before the original Ipods there where loads of other mp3 players, heck even better ones but Apple managed to make it something the world wanted and WHAM the digital download market for buying Music shot sky high. Hopefully the Ipad can do the same same for printed media, bringing the idea of ebooks and such to the masses.
