MWEB ISP peering list for gamers

Awesome article thanks Tinman!

This finally answers my questions and I think a lot of people are only NOW grasping what's been said all along. If you have an MWEB account or IS-based account - you'll be able to play Black Ops. Any other account means you WON'T be able to play Black Ops. It's as simple as that :)

That means - no Black Ops for me. And because MWEB went ahead and made the hosting "exclusive" to themselves, it means no one else in SA will be able to provide Black Ops to those who cannot play on MWEB's stuffed up infrastructure.

So - is MWEB still the good guy? I think not. They basically took our chances of getting Black Ops servers away from everyone else - I flippen TOLD you so.

So that means for me that is on Vodacom that i am stuffed if i want to play Black Ops multiplayer? WTF? I wont get a fixed line just for black ops. I will just carry on playing SC2 then. Screw Mweb.

YAY - you're one of the few who's finally realized what's actually going on. Can you understand why I'm so confused when people are actually cheering MWEB's decisions lately? I'm like WTFOMWBBQ?

I totally understand what you are saying, but don't you think its worth forking out an IS-based account? I know I'm not the only one here with a crappy Telkom account and at least 1 IS International account for when you reach your Telkom local only. Anyway, guess my Axxess Lite and Free Afrihost 1Gb account will be gaming accounts now on lol
Now I just hope this game wont use a lot of cap

Why crap on Mweb because they want to change things for the better? Look at the article, the two ISP's that are not budging are MTN and Telkom (vodacom are in the process of peering).

Do I even have to justify how k@k these ISP's are? Telkom's still charging retarded prices and MTN just chooses to ignore everything that is happening in the market (look at the current 3G promotions from Cell C and Vodacom).

Dude...Telkom means SAIX.....get it right please! SAIX is rather a bit bigger than a simple "DoGaming" account. So when you read Telkom, READ SAIX...SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNET EXCHANGE! Geesh....why don't you back off a bit and take in the bigger picture?

Go read my thread I just made on what MWEB did to gamers in South Africa - then - once you've started to understand what's going on here - tell me again just how "better" they've made it.

Yes? The bad guys here are the ones that won't peer with them and keep on profiteering. While the whole peering strategy benefits MWEB greatly by reducing their costs, it benefits everyone in the long term, even competing ISPs and in the end consumers as bandwidth costs are reduced across the board. Don't be short sighted and only see the "hassle" in the here and now, rather bitch at the service providers that are stubborn and won't come to the table to improve the internet in SA (the usual suspects). I mean if you look at the table on MyBB, its just Telkom and MTN that are still being asshats.

Also, if MWEB didn't get the hosting rights, we wouldn't have had Black Ops at all.

@frank007, Vodacom has caved and is peering with MWEB.

Please back up your statement with evidence. iGame, WAGE and I'm sure SGS would have been awarded the opportunity to host the servers because GameServers saw the need from the GAMERS who petitioned online - not some slick-suited MWEB business man. You guys really have some thick wool over your eyes. MWEB is trying to make the mountain come to it, instead of walking to the mountain themselves. They screwed their own online gamers by messing up their latency to servers which they COULD play on in the past - so how do you try and get some of that market back? Oh I know - we'll be the only ones hosting the country's most popular online game.

Duh people. Duh.

I know what they are trying to do but at the expense of the rest of the gamers in SA not using Mweb and IS. What they should have done is got together with the rest of the sp and spoke about it before hand. They cant just change over night. There is alot of planning that has to go into changing everything. Then after a month when they all have their ducks in a row they can start with it. Then no one is badly effected.

All i hope is that vodacom sorts it out before the 9th November. I wont get black ops till it is sorted.

If you paid for the hosted servers that they have then your statement would have made sense.

Mweb should have never got the Black Ops servers due to this "plan" that they have. Its going to stop many people from buying the game when it comes out. That is going to affect sales records in SA. What a clever idea that they cocked up fully.

I am looking at the bigger picture. If all ISP's went with open peering it would reduce the cost of bandwidth. This in turn would make it more affordable for more people. Therefore, we would have more people that could be a part of the gaming community in SA.

Yes it sucks big time that many of our gaming servers are sitting on SAIX, but if we put pressure on these guys to go open peering then its only going to be a temporary issue. However, successfully implementing total peering would have much more far reaching and long lasting benefits for gamers.

Here's my prediction:

MWEB thinks it's being the best Samaritan this country has ever seen by going "rogue". I think their own gamers are going to leave their services and rather join ISP's like WebAfrica so that they can at least play their games online again. Once that happens and they start actually losing members (i.e money) the other ISPs will point and laugh at them.

You know what MWEB reminds me of? Those people that "left" South African government and made their own "country" called Orania. They did their own thing and shunned all the rules of the government and hoped people would join them. You know what? Even tough what they're doing does work for them to a degree, most people ignored it and went on as normal.

Does MWEB really think it's such a strong market leader that if they make a change, the rest will be somehow "forced" to follow? Please man - they really think a bit too much of themselves. The only thing that happened here is our chances of getting Black Ops servers, was ruined by MWEB.

Neo, I agree with Mweb here even though I badly want to play COD. Yes, they are screwing us over to an extent, but for how long have we not been screwed by everyone because of the whole peering costs?

Mweb has not really done anything wrong here. They are offering free traffic to everyone prepared to offer it back, so how on earth are they the bad guys? Telkom/SAIX & MTN must catch a fucking wake up and play the game as well.

Agree with Sirf/Den

It's about time the Telkom-Sheeple woke up, maybe one day they'll see the bigger picture.
Neo, so you would rather keep on being ripped-off by a company that are charging exorbitant rates for internet and have silly requirements. So what you are actually saying is keep your eyes shut and just take it like you should from Telkom. The SAIX servers have gotten so weak without administration. Almost all the servers these days are filled with hackers. It's about time someone stepped up and took the gaming community in a new direction. As for your prediction I see it as follows, more people move over to MWEB as they launch new Game servers and services. If they play their cards right the gaming community will reward them. At least someone is trying to take on Telkom’s monopoly.

Oh just one technicality guys - when you mention MTN - please say MTN Network Solutions - not "MTN", it's not ayoba to blame the wrong company :D

If you've followed MyBB at all the in past 7 years, you'd know that talking with the fatcats at Telkom/Vodacom/MTN has gotten SA no where. They would NEVER willingly agree to peer with the ISPs out of the goodness of their hearts so that we could plan and schedule it so that everyone in internet land could be happy. Heck, they even blatanty ignore and bully the regulator. They needed to have their user base and profits impacted before they would budge. The fact that Vodacom, one of the three evils, has caved is huge.

Talking ended years back and it was inevitable this was going to happen at some point (or we could wait for government and ICASA to make it happen right? I thought not). MWEB felt they were in a strong enough position now, so they cut the transit links. Its not like it was that sudden either, they said a while ago that they were going to do it, apparently no one believed them.
