MWEB ISP peering list for gamers

Dude...Telkom means SAIX.....get it right please! SAIX is rather a bit bigger than a simple "DoGaming" account. So when you read Telkom, READ SAIX...SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNET EXCHANGE! Geesh....why don't you back off a bit and take in the bigger picture?

You talk about the bigger picture and yet you're flaming MWEB for fighting tooth and nail against an opponent far larger? Yeah, I can see why people aren't getting your message...

Mweb should have never got the Black Ops servers due to this "plan" that they have. Its going to stop many people from buying the game when it comes out. That is going to affect sales records in SA. What a clever idea that they cocked up fully.

Isn't what may happen quite the opposite - before MWEB came along, many were not going to buy the game due to the lack of SA servers.

Vodacom as a whole hasn't "caved". It's Vodacom business - and by no means the entire "Vodacom". Plus it's an a "proof of concept" mode - which means it could be rolled back and ignored instantly.

Wrong. A lot of other hosting services in the country were pushing for the rights to host the servers. Little did they know that people working for MWEB dressed in suits, carrying briefcases already signed an "exclusivity" agreement with GameServers. So here's the question: "If MWEB didn't sign an exclusivity deal with GameServers, would other guys like iGame, WAGE and SGS have been able to host the servers for us?"

The answer is: "Most probably YES".

Does MWEB really think it's such a strong market leader that if they make a change, the rest will be somehow "forced" to follow? Please man - they really think a bit too much of themselves. The only thing that happened here is our chances of getting Black Ops servers, was ruined by MWEB.

I do not think MWEB really will drive their business model according to the whims of gamers.

The only reason we have Black Ops servers is because of MWEB - how is this 'ruined by MWEB'?

I don't think you understand the history behind the Black Ops servers. I also don't know why people have this misguided idea that MWEB was the only company capable of getting the servers into the country. By signing an "exclusivity" deal, it means GameServers recognized SA already as a candidate for their servers - anyone with a proper facility could have done so (iGame, WAGE, SGS - easy as pie) - MWEB just swooped in an locked out everyone else. Smart play by them, but it screwed us over.

You really should stop telling people that MWEB is responsible for Black Ops servers in the country. YOU....ARE.....WRONG.

Please back up your statement with evidence. iGame, WAGE and I'm sure SGS would have been awarded the opportunity to host the servers because GameServers saw the need from the GAMERS who petitioned online - not some slick-suited MWEB business man.

lol, funny thing is I just asked in your other thread to provide some proof that other ISP indeed would have gotten a deal from Gameservers.com
http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthr...tand-what-MWEB-has-done-to-gamers-in-SA/page2

Are you really sure we would have gotten a deal? Look at Asia, their users have been trying now to get more server locations set up, because only Japan is stated as a location for a server. Now that is the whole of Asia, while we're just South Africa
So provide us with some proof mate, because what was made clear is that some ISP's struggled to get a deal with Gameservers.com

Neo, I get why you are upset, but to expect a large organisation to consider a couple of hundred gamers when it had thousands of other clients to consider is naive.

Again, so what. Boohoo, Mweb beat the others to it. It's called business. You snooze you lose.

As for the others getting if Mweb didn't sign, who knows. Willing to take the chance that there would be NO Black Ops locally?

I thought that MWEB was renting servers to others such as iGame, so how have they locked out everyone.

Um, currently MWEB is responsible for Black Ops servers in the country....YOU....ARE.....WRONG ;)

I think this is just a little bit of collateral damage that followed MWEB's move to cut peering costs. It's just a game. The broadband situation in this country is not though. I'm glad MWEB took the action that they did. They're actually making a big impact on the way broadband competition works in this country.

Luckily I will be able to play the game, which I'm not sure I will be getting yet though, but I can understand why some people might be frustrated. But you should not be pissed off at MWEB, rather be annoyed by the people that failed to realize that we would all be in this position one day due to their bs broadband monopoly tactics.

Well done MWEB, really. Hopefully the other ISPs will follow, soon.

Well, with regards to Black Ops, we know that the feedback from ISPs has been that they have battled to get any kind of response from gameservers at all, let alone negotiate some kind of hosting agreement. If this was the case prior to MWEB getting the hosting rights, we would have been screwed if they didn't. If it was after they got the hosting rights, then we may have seen Gameservers hosted at another provider.

Important to note though, Gameservers is a service, so it would have always remained exclusive to their chosen hosting provider.

In a sense, this model makes things more accessible to everyone. For instance, now anybody can go to Gameservers.com and get their own dedi or cluster of dedis with just a few clicks and do what they want with them. Previously if I wanted to do that, I would have to rent a cabinet at a datacenter, set up a server box and maintain that box which is far more effort and money than the average Joe wants to spend on setting up a server for friends/clannies/mods/their own rules etc.

So yes, pretty much EVERYONE can get their own dedi easily and cheaply this way. However, what is different is that normally iGame/Wage/SGS would host and maintain the servers in their datacentres, in this case they would not have physical access to the server boxes. They can still moderate, mod and operate those dedis as they please though.

Black Ops is a obviously a special case though. Normally the server software for games is freely distributed, so you could choose to set up your own box or go with a game hosting provider, you only have option 2 with Black Ops.

Thanks for explaining it so well :)

Well for the rest of us that dont have mweb we may aswell of never had servers in SA. That is what it all boils down to till the rest of them join the fight!
