I had the pleasure of being asked to put together a gaming machine for one very lucky teenager. The father has fairly deep pockets.

What do you think of this:

Case: Coolermaster CM690 II Advanced
PSU: Gigabyte ODIN 720W
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D E LX
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR-1600 2x2Gb
CPU: Intel Core i5 760
Graphics: eVGA GeForce GTX 470
Sound: ASUS Xonar Essence ST
Optical drive: LG GH22LS50 22x Lightscribe
Hard Drives: 500Gb Seagate Barracuda
1Tb Seagate Barracuda
Keyboard: Microsoft Sidewinder X6
Mouse: Logitech G500 laser gaming mouse
Speakers: Creative Inspire T6200
Monitor: Samsung B2430H
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium

What would you change if you were putting this together?

Wow wish my dad had such deep pockets... Haha
I would maybe change the screen to a LED one, maybe something like a BX2450? But I really think it's an awesome pc!

not keen fan of the odin psu, rather go something like thermaltake, corsair, coolemaster or Antec.

Questions:

Why did you give him an i5 CPU and not an i7?
Why did you only give him a 720Watt PSU?

I'd give the guy more bang for his buck AND give him more future proofing by slapping in an i7 950 and a decent i7 motherboard. The rest of the PC seems fine, but I'd also look at swapping the Creative speakers for Logitech's. I don't care what people say about logitech, but their speakers are good and Creative's speakers are a LOT more flimsy.

i'd agree on the i7 and logitech. creative was king back in the day, but logetch is so much more these days imho.

Swap the Gigabyte Odin with a Corsair PSU, maybe a 650W unit. Wont need any more than that.

And maybe swap the 470 for a 6870.

Would swop the case for a Coolermaster HAF 922/932,Swop the I5 for a I7,change the psu to a Corsair-min 750 watt,change the gpu to gtx460 sli or 1 x gtx480.

Cheers

I have a feeling if you change the GPU to a GTX480 you're going to break the R20,000 budget. I did a mock up of this build quickly and came to R17,000 - supplier price - so anything more than that you're really cutting deep into your profits.

Well 1x gtx 470 = R3150,2x gtx460 = R4000,1x gtx480 = R4800,so for R850 more the sli gtx 460's are a steal seeing that the gtx 470 is a pretty shitty card for that price.

cheers

Go for the i7 870 rather,
CoolerMaster 650W rather
ATI 6870 or 5870 or budget permitting 5970
HDD, stick a 1Tb in, price difference between 500 and 1tB is minimal
Screen BX2450
WIndows make 64 bit
Speakers look at logitech rather. x530 very nice
Motherboard make it the P7P55DE Pro if budget allows
The Sound is nice, but not an essential in my opinion - save money
And try go for a good CPU cooler. Stock cooler isn't enough.
Leave the chassis. It is more than enough and the others whilst very nice, are simply budget destroyers.

Speakers? People still use those? Why not rather get a nice Sennheiser headset with Mic instead? If it's a gaming rig, he's going to need headphones and a mic...

Juice

i do. i use my 5.1 speakers as well as my roccat kave 5.1 headset. seriously use just headset 24.7 on a pc ? lol ?

I would change the 500gig to 2x 1tb and run raid0. much better. less of a chance for a bottle neck on hdd. I would also say 2x GTX460's. My GTX460's rape a single GTX480 and at the price they are well worth it. Also change to an i7 950 for the price they are now. HAF922 better cooling. I would also go for a LED. Prices have come down so why not? That is only my opinion and i have not really had a look at the pricing so i dont know if i have gone over budget? Something like mine without the SSD's. That would be very very nice.
