"PS3 hardware limitations held back Gran Turismo 5"

ThreadJacked.jpg

anyways....

sounds a bit eish to me... hardware limitations on the ps3?

even more far fetched as to the 360 is not good enough...

what's next? the pc isn't powerful enough for it?

i guess the day that happens Crysis will have been replaced...

I have always been of the opinion that a good dev can do as much with a less powerful platform as a bad dev can do on the most powerful platform. In other words, if the dev is good enough they will be able to push the hardware much further.

true enough.

now imagine the same dev that does the most with a limited platform and applies that same level of skill to a more powerful one.

good examples here are all on the PS2:

Shadow of the Collosus
God of War 1 and 2

those games just pushed the ps2's hardware so far and still looked great and didn't suffer much. plus they were all awesome to play.

even the GT titles were like that.

but if Polyphony hit the wall with the ps3... hmm... something sounds wrong

Totally agree. One of my personal fav examples is that of Silent Hill 2, widely regarder as one of the most atmospheric games of recent times, well the main thing that added atmosphere was the ever enclosing fog, which was put in to compensate for the poor drawing distance caused by limited hardware.

and that to a degree eliminated a problem we have with most games today.... the ever present and rather crap problem of Texture pop in. Gears of War and Mass Effect series are particularly guilty of this

The texture pop ins is mostly due to the engine though, the Unreal engine is notorious for its texture pop ins.

right... forgot :(

anyhows, yeah. i think Polyphony is blowing smoke.

be that as it may, i'll be getting GT5 sometime later. want to see what took so long :p

I might also pick it up just to see what the fuss is about.

Wasn't there another developer who also said the PS3 had been maxed by their title?

i believe Naughty Dog said that Uncharted 2 nearly maxed out the ps3...

Oh yeah it was them. Well after seeing how MGS 4 looked, and this is a old game, I must say Naughty Dog was talking out of their ass. MGS 4 looked a hole lot better than Uncharted 2.

but let's be honest here... Uncharted 2 played a load better than MGS4.

(mgs fan here)

I disagree. MGS4 is still a very stunning game, but overall UC2 trumps it in every point. From the amount of detail present at any given time on screen to a consistent framerate. Unlike MGS4's "OMG we're dropping to sub 24fps for this section of the cinematic"~engine.

I still love MGS4 more than Uncharted 2, but I can acknowledge when something's the superior product.

ah...

MGS = loads of cutscenes and verbal spuit skuit...

beware!

but it is EPIC none the less

Thus far into MGS4 i have not come across any graphical issues such as noticible drops in frame rate. I will reserve judgement for once i have experienced more of it.

But i know why Uncharted 2 didn't grab me.

I have heard this, which is one of the main reasons ive put off getting it until now, just could never justify spending that kinda money on a game i didn't know if id enjoy. Saw it preplayed in BT for under R300 (R239 or something) and just couldn't think of a reason not to get it.

the gameplay parts are good. story is well.... you'll find out soon enough :p

Act 4! EPIC! has a new definition

I played most of MGS3 Sons of Liberty on orginal xbox. And there already the plot was making me wish i had an encyclopedia handy, apparently there is a thing you can download from PSN that is basically just that.

Yeah, MGS Encyclopedia on PSN is sweet. The MGS4 specific sections are locked until you've cleared the relevant sections of the game so that it doesn't spoil anything for you.

On which act are you now?
