Completely new PC

Hi guys.

So, at the end of this year, I am getting a whole new PC - as my previous one is so old and worn, it can't run anything.

Now, I have absolutely no idea what is good in the market right now. I have been looking on take2, but that was quite awhile ago. So my wishlists etc are kinda out of date.

What I am basically going to need:

CPU (quadcore? around 2K should be enough?)
GPU (Nvidia preferably)
Motherboard (no Idea what a good mobo is)
4Gigs of RAM (http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-transcend-axe-ram-ddr2-1066mhz-2x2gb-4gb-kit-3801880.html)
2 TB of HDD space (http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-...dd-32mb-cache-sata-2-3-0gb-s-4916834.html)(so 2 of these)
DVD writer (again, no idea what a good one is)
Mouse ( a razer?)
keyboard (Uhm, no idea - but a USB keyboard)
headphones (I have spotted some nice ones for R399 (sennheiser))
a flatscreen (thinking of a samsung BX2450)
Case (coolermaster, but I don't know which one)
networking card, 1Gbit. I have a 100Mbit, but I do know I will need a faster one.

so basically I need a new PC plus peripherals. anything I'm missing? Also, my budget is around 12-14K.

Thanks for any advice guys.

There will be other people that should give you better advice than me, but I just want to point out that you don't need a network car. Your mother board will have an on-board NIC. :)

It would be best to go for a quad, definitely. It's up to you to decide which way you're going to go, AMD or Intel. Once your choice is made the pick would be obvious. If you go Intel you'd most probably want to get the i5 or i3 and if you go AMD, maybe wait until the beginning of next year when they will be releasing some very nice 6 and 8 core CPUs.

Not much advice, but that's my 2c :D.

- P55 style entry level mobo for R1500 will do. check some nice boards there. I myself have the LX.

2GB RAM DDR3 1333 (x2) (perfrect) - http://nivo.co.za/#buy~transcend.jetram.2gb.1333mhz.ddr3.desktop.memory.module.jm1333klu.2g.~p14363

Coolermaster ELITE 310 isnt very expensive. - http://nivo.co.za/buy~cooler.master.elite.rc.310.mid.tower.chassis.black.and.blue~p19624

need a power supply: Gigabyte ODIN 585W will do - http://nivo.co.za/#buy~gigabyte.odin.585.watts.atx.power.supply~p14242

Network is built into the board.. unless u mean u want a gigabit router?

Check where that all gets u in budget... shop around.. upgrade parts here and there as u want to match to ur budget. :)

The above shoudl def hit ur budget fine.. with some extra room. I estimate.

All of the above looks just about perfect. Some questions: Does the Case have more than 2 USB ports? And will the fan be enough, or should I buy more fans? Also, the CPU doesn't say boxed - does it come with a fan or will I have to buy one for the CPU?

Internal hardware I can't comment since I only ever pay attention to the news when I need something, and right now, I haven't for almost a year. But as far as the externals go:

Keyboard: Delux's are really hardy, the keys never fade away.
Mouse: Canyon's are ergonomic, reliable and cheap and have some great extras features.
Screen: Can't go wrong with either Samsung or LG but stay the fuck away from Semens.

Thanks DC bloodhound, that looks great. Also, thanks Raven for the suggestions.

EDIT: Have totalled up items, it comes within a grand of my budget so this is ideal. Thanks.

Since you have a grand left rather upgrade your graphics card to either a hd5850 or a gtx460.

Hi, ok so this is what I'm thinking:

Everything in MrG's list, except:

I'll replace the GPU with a gtx460, I've added a Razer MO-RAM mouse, A new keyboard, new mouse pads, the case will be the CM RC430 Elite and I will go for the 5 fans suggested.

Now two quick questions. Will the PSU be enough to power all of this? Also, does the CPU come with a fan? It didn't specify on the box, so I am not sure.

@Strategist01: 585W will be enough. You can't go wrong getting a high end PSU because of the MANY years of future proofing it gives you, but if your on a budget as long as you buy a good brand name it will still serve you well.

To answer your second question, all CPU's come with a "stock" cooler. Not much room for overclocking with them, but they aren't bad. If you have no intention of overclocking, you won't ever need to change it for an aftermarket cooler.

Ok, thanks on the PSU. I can't really go for mroe expensive as my budget kinda full now. I didn't know they now sold CPUs with fans already, I still kinda remember where it had to say boxed if you wanted a fan on it :p
