Crytek say “PC is easily a generation ahead”, being held back by consoles

Crysis developers Crytek spoke out today saying that while PC’s are a generation ahead of the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but that future PC games will be limited by having to cater to less powerful consoles.

Speaking to Edge, Crytek’s CEO Cervat Yerli said “As long as the current console generation exists and as long as we keep pushing the PC as well, the more difficult it will be to really get the benefit of both,” adding that “PC is easily a generation ahead right now. With 360 and PS3, we believe the quality of the games beyond Crysis 2 and other CryEngine developments will be pretty much limited to what their creative expressions is, what the content is. You won’t be able to squeeze more juice from these rocks.”

Discussing the reasons for this, Yerli says “I generally think it’s still developers’ mentality. A lot nowadays don’t consider PC a big issue any more; their [sales] expectations are nowhere near what they are for the console versions. Until the PC market creates comparable revenues, companies are not going to spend enough on the PC SKU of a game.”

Crytek are currently working on Crysis 2, which will be see a multiplatform release on March 22nd 2011. There are plenty of stunning screenshots and videos of the game over on the Crysis 2 site. You can see Cervat Yerli talking us through a level from Crysis 2 in the video below.

I'd be interested to see the difference in profit margins between Crysis and say Unreal from 1998. Taking into account inflation and all that of course

well duh. if we have consoles on generation 1 gpus and pcs start out on same gpu, but the pcs gets constant gpu, cpu and ability for more ram.... of course the pc's will always be a step a head.

however i wonder how much profit unreal 3 engine has raked in on the consoles.

It's kind of logical that high-end PC's are going to be more advanced than consoles that are a few years old. That being said, how many people have the cash to constantly upgrade their PC's to keep up with higher system spec requirements?

it's exactly 3 years next month since i spent 14k on my pc and lol it's not due for an upgrade soon. only box getting an update and that is in parts for next few months is partner's computer.

on the console part, i'd lol if you had to buy a new one so soon after getting one about 1.5 years back.

And yet the masses flock to consoles. That what you get when the tech noobs outnumber the clued up people. FTL

No, that's what you get when people don't get all stupid about platforms. I've been PC gaming since 1985 or 1986, I've built plenty of my own systems... and I'm mostly an Xbox gamer now.

I don't need my game platform to be a penis extension. I just need it to play games.

And here I thought creative expression and content were always more important that OMGRAPHICSLOL, anyway.

I would be a console gamer but all my fav genres I don't like playing on a controller.
I was a console gamer before I owned a pc(I owned a nes,sega megadrive)

i fear that day when it will be about just playing and enjoying games for the sake of gaming without the platform/zomg graphics is still far of, if possible at all :(

imho seriously lame excuse, just get use to it and you won't even "know" you have a controller in your hands enjoying games.

when i get home i want to enjoy my fucking game not practically re-program it to work. that's definitely one side i do enjoy of my console VS my pc.

Would be a little bit of a waste, wouldn't it? :D

I think that is where the tech noobs actually come in - you have no idea how many times I've heard the "AWESOME GRAPHICS" argument from both PC and console gamers. I'm fairly sure the PS3 vs XBox 360 crowd were doing comparisons not all that long ago.

In any case - PC's are continually developing - if you had to plot the two on a graph the PC upgrade graph would probably be a slope - while consoles would be represented by a stepped graph. As for the question regarding how many gamers can afford to keep upgrading their machines to keep up with technology - well, obviously, a lot of them can.

The issue is the capability is there but it's not being used. Bit of a waste

Games looking pretty much the same as 3 years ago is getting old. Even for non graphics aficionados.....

Thank you.

This is just it, why does everyone always go on about content vs. graphics? Geez people, don't be silly. The game's look is very much a part of the content.

Anyway..looking at that chart that hideinlight posted...So why are we paying R8000 for GPU's again?

This is all very true, PC definitely is far ahead of the consoles.

The only thing I'd worry about is if developers had to use the full potential of the PC when developing games, wouldn't it be very expensive to develop games? Secondly, wouldn't it be very difficult for us consumers to afford the insane technology that makes PC so far ahead of the consoles? As far as I'm concerned, the reason I switched to console was because it was cheaper than maintaining a PC... and I suppose graphics shouldn't be everything that a game has to offer. What we need is more development in the software department, not just hardware.

Obvias!
Xbox 360 was released in 2005?
PS3 was released in 2007?
(please correct me if I am wrong)
PC gets new hardware available every 6 months or so

I don't think I can quite agree with that. Graphics don't make a game - they never will. I'll do the whole "ooh-aah" thing for shiny graphics just as much as anyone else, but when push comes to shove I'll rather play the game with crappy graphics for years on end than play a visually stunning game that has nothing else going for it.

Similar to my argument for Avatar - might have looked uber awesome in 3D, but that didn't save it from being a crap movie.

Um no it is not. I have played fps shooters on consoles for a while and it always feels uncomfortable and a mission to aim at things.

it all comes down to getting used and over the thing of being spoilt having a mouse and keyboard. it's really not as bad as everyone likes to make it out once you are just used to it and gets past the point of that thing in your hands being a controller imho.

I have tried and just don't enjoy fps and rts games on the controller. I grew up playing platforms and beat em ups on the old consoles. In my opinion is where the console shines.
