Sexuality in Gaming

Or another one why are female characters dressed the same as male characters that sometimes feels wrong to me. But then it comes back to the Homo/lesbian thing.

This discussion has made me notice something. Through out the entire Call of Duty series upto MW2, I've only ever seen one female character, and that was the crashed chopper pilot in CoD4 just before the nuke goes off.

Don't know if its true, but but females are never foot solders AFAIK

Personally I would like to see a developer make a game with a thoroughly homosexual theme and then I would hope that the game would be the next WoW, COD, BattleField, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Halo, Gears of War, Duke Nukem in terms of awesomeness and popularity. THEN, I would like to see who doesn't play it.

What I hate is that society makes it unpopular to dislike it and it's completely acceptable and dandy, that's the only thing I'd be vocal about regarding the whole LGBT thing.

So just to be clear, you would have discrimination against homosexuals continue?

I will honestly say that I feel the homosexual community is incredibly promiscuous. I've met...seven...homosexuals this life. And they were all insanely, immensely promiscuous. So maybe I'm wrong, but from what I've seen, it's true.

Generalising seven people to an entire community, wow thats quite a big step. I've met a hell of a lot of straight people who are promiscuous, does that mean all of them are?

She makes a really, really good point, though. I've no doubt some of the guys who play the "identity crisis" card would have no trouble whatsoever playing a game as a female character.

I wonder how this topic extends into MMOs? :p

All my characters are female :D And pretty. And no ... they do NOT have huge knockers (can't believe I'm using that word - but I'm trying to keep pace with the thread here).

Returning to point - I don't think I've ever given it much thought, to be honest. When I'm playing any game with a storyline, the character forms part of that storyline and I'm only controlling him, I don't see him/her/it/whatever as being some sort of reflection of myself. RPGs demand a slightly different approach, since your actions determine the storyline and the ultimate outcome of the game to some degree. Sexual orientation of the character is usually very far down my list of things I pay attention to.

It's actually a little challenging to decide how to classify it - using MMOs as an example again, people tend to describe the characters they create as reflections of themselves, maybe? In which case I have a problem (sexual identity crisis anyone?), although in my case I give each of my characters a slightly different personality (yes, I act differently based on which char I'm logged into at any particular time. Maybe the writer in me is interfering :D

Better? :)

I don't think a game of such a nature would even make the shelves, to be honest. Let's remember that homosexual (in the minds of conservative people who like censoring content in games) = OMGsexDRUGS!!

I always wondered when you talked to Kaden in Mass Effect with the pause and the camera angles if there is the option for some gay loving....

I know, I was just meaning more hypothetical.

But the whole relating the character thing is also sometimes really absurd. So we are happy to play characters that can gun down hundreds of people, bad or good, but heaven forbid you play a character that bonks or loves another character of the same sex??? I mean how many of us are really bad mass motherfuckers who can shoot, slice, poison, hack, dismember, blow up or incinerate people to death? None? So how do you possibly relate to those characters?

I personally think, it actually doesn't matter what the sexual orientation the character is that your are 'controlling' in the game.
Aslong as it's a solid, well written and an exciting game. The last thing on our minds would be that the character is homosexual :)
