PC/Console Piracy vs Series/Movie Piracy

I pay my ISP which I use to download with, I pay for the DVD I put the game on. Payment is made no matter what, how much and to who seems to be the defining difference here.

*facepalm*

In all the scores of piracy debates I've seen play out on the Interwebs over the years this has to be the single most ridiculous argument I've ever come across.

By this same logic, if I pay for a lock pick and use it to steal a car then no laws have been broken, right? Or what about the AK-47 I just bought that I'm going to use to rob a liquor store this afternoon? I'm sure the cops will let me go once I show them the gun's receipt.

And, while we're at it, I'm coming round to your house tonight to sleep with your wife/girlfriend. Don't worry though, I'll be sure to apologize to a random stranger afterwards.

LOL - you are going to bring out your library example :D

It's just one of many, but yes ;) I could also state how casual gamers (the ones most likely to pirate games because they have no real emotional investment in it) are the ones who buy the most. I could also remind you that pirates, by large, contribute more to the industry as a whole than someone who buys maybe once in a blue moon (based solely on the fact that pirates are 10 times more likely to buy than someone who doesn't pirate.) There's also the simple argument that piracy isn't lost revenue because the person who pirated something may have had absolutely no intention to buy it in the first place (no different to watching at a friend's place or borrowing from them).

But I'm tired of that debate because it doesn't seem like anyone is ever really interested in debating so much as they are in preaching their self-righteous, one-sided high-horsed nonsense.

I just consider it largely futile because people refuse to accept that piracy is a grey issue, not black and not white and anyone trying to turn it into either is blinded by their egos.

Lol...

I just pirated the plastic spoon out of the kitchen into my coffee holder... I did pay for the coffee so it's cool ;)

I have nothing against piracy when you copy and and don't resell. I think that if you make money off of something that you paid nothing for is just plain wrong. Also, like Lycanthrope (still waiting for that example) said if a pirated material gets out more and more people will buy it than not. There is this one example when a guy's comic book was bootlegged on 4chan and the next day he saw like 2x increase in sales. I can't find that link, but I saw the data. The people who will make money from sales will make money and piracy will rarely hurt them as almost all of our media content comes from big production houses.

The example of pirates being more likely to buy, or the library one?

I've refined my stance significantly since then, but the idea is much the same :)

Using (watching/listening etc etc) something you didn't pay for or have the right to use is wrong. I'm not going to bog down the debate with silly arguments or good examples that will be twisted.

It's wrong get over it. Society today lives as if each person is a god and is owed everything, so what if the movie is released here later on. Will your life end to wait 3 months to watch it? No, so don't do it.

Thank you.

But, I digress. The piracy I support, doesn't harm developers or publishers. It is the knowledge that should I find something I enjoy and that I love, I am guaranteed to buy it. If I play something and it is mediocre and mundane and doesn't appeal to me, then I will not buy it. This is no different to a friend having bought a game, told you it sucks, shown it to you and let you make your own mind up about it. It is my belief that piracy is the best form of word-of-mouth advertising there is for good games, and dreadful for bad games - I consider this fair.

Ever heard of a demo? Your online library of games, is there also a monthly fee to have access to this library? Like every other library in the world.

I wanted the Library one :)

Gotcha :)

Monthly fee to have access to a library? Since when? Depending on whether the library is public or private, it is either funded by tax or by donations. Regardless, the books are bought once and distributed to whomever. The only fee a client of a library pays, is a late return fee.

Demos... Daikatana had a decent demo, if I recall? So did Gothic 4. Both were foul.

Good idea :p That thread is a bit... antediluvian :D

I really like the library idea, but who would fund it? Certainly you can't imagine titles like Starcraft 2 coming out of a system with extremely limited funding.

Most library's have an annual fee which you have to pay to be allowed access to, I paid mine 2 days ago. And they are supported by tax as well... might not be for much longer.

/eyes his library card >.>

I've never paid a cent?

It's not the most perfect analogy, but if you couple it with the "pirates are likely to make more sales" then that's where the extra funding comes from. Besides, you have to remember that Games/Music are not the sole provider of income for these companies, one will support the other or they have investment revenue to help develop the game/record the music/film the movie.
