Closing PS3 MW2 servers viable solution to cheaters

I said this in the original thread regarding the hacking of the PS3 to re-enable homebrew support and I will say it again; Regardless of GeoHot's apparent noble intentions, by releasing this hack/bypass/skeleton key he had done serious damage to not only sony but every developer and publisher who use the platform. MW2 might be the first major title to fall victim to it but it wont be the last. If the MW2 server for the PS3 is shut down this could possibly be a nail in the PS3's coffin, unless Sony finds someway to circumvent this hack.
Why would developers continue to develop for a unsecured platform where upon release they will not only face rampant piracy but their paying customers will become more and more frustrated by hackers who ruin online gaming for them. Imagine the impact this could have on Killzone 3, one of Sony's flagship IPs.

The debate over whether or not GeoHot was justified in hacking the ps3 is irrelevant, as are his noble intentions.
As a PS3 owner myself I really hope Sony manages some miracle to restore order to the PS3 Galaxy and if they dont... well we all know what happened to the PSP.

Im just upset because this could mean more frequent and if not bigger updates and we all know our data costs here in sunny SA.....

I think the problem is, like it says in the article, there is nothing the devs can do. They can make u update it twice a day and still not get any results.

Then why are the Xbox servers not also shutdown? Or the PC?

They also have plenty of hackers and pirated versions running amok their.

This made me realize just how serious this hack really is, dont get me wrong we all knew it was just a matter of time before the system would be hacked however I never would have imagined the severity and negative consequences coz of it. The fact that it hinders honest paying players is a travesty, why should they suffer?

Omega - the machine gun and atomic bomb were both made with noble intentions, look at what its used for today.

On PC steam anti-cheat system helps and for the Xbox you need to chip u console which MS can detect and ban you off live, thus preventable. The PS3's hacks can, as yet, not be detected thus no ban.

The machine gun was designed to kill, as was the atomic bomb. Gun powder was invented with noble intention, splitting the atom was made possible with noble intentions. Somehow busting the security protocols of a gaming platform wide open doesn't quiet measure up.

This is what happens when developers are spoiled by working in an environment where you can trust the client (console) for four years. They get crap lazy and don't implement any security of their own and its coming back to bite them and everyone else.

The no.1 rule of security, you can NEVER trust the client. Any device can be cracked wide open at any time, relying on security inside a device sitting in the hands of hackers to protect your user base is a very, very stupid mistake.

With any luck, this gives 360 game developers an eye opener and motivation to secure their shit in the almost inevitable case the same thing happens to that console.

The Xbox is already subject to modification and hacking. THE DIFFERENCE, of course, being that - with Xbox LIVE a premium service, and standards of service guaranteed - Microsoft can and do ban players and even consoles.

On Modern Warfare 2's launch, there was a lot of hacking happening on both Xbox LIVE and the PSN until IW fixed the exploits. Microsoft banned players, Sony did nothing. Guess which console had players quickly behaving themselves?

be that as it may, i do hope sony can find a way around this issue, or at the very least, ban access from the online portion of things.

yeah kinda hard consdering PSN is still largely free

I happen to recall sometime last year there was a big discussion about why PSN is free and Xbox Live not.... oh the irony.

I probably should have stated my original point more clearly:

When someone does something "naughty" on an Xbox 360 like modifies something or "hacks" it, the console reports itself when you sign into XBL to Microsoft as possibly compromised. Microsoft doesn't detect so much as the console gives itself up. While some of the safeguards on the 360 have been bypassed, the safeguards around this reporting process are largely still intact. Obviously this makes finding and banning troublemakers quite easy.

The PS3 does pretty much exactly the same thing, except now people can sign their own code on the console as if they were Sony. Basically, they've bypassed this process and the console doesn't report itself as compromised since it doesn't know its been compromised.

If you've been developing games relying on that luxury to keep your multiplayer clean (and clearly some developers have been) you've made a dire mistake as its a luxury that can be taken away at any given moment. It also violates the no. 1 rule of security in that you cannot trust the client, you need your own safeguards in place.

Lastly, in my original post I wasn't attacking 360 developers. I was simply saying that it may be a wake up call to 360 game developers if they've been relying on this security as well. It gives them an opportunity to get their own safeguards in place before the storm.

Service charges relates more to response time and moderation. Moderation of course is definitely a method of controlling hackers but it needs to be used in conjunction with software to really clamp down on the problem.

TO be perfectly honest, it would make no difference to me, as I do not play MP on console. Has just never appealed to me. But should developers stop MAKING games for PS3, well that will become another story altogether.

If that happens sony stock will tank, and we would see a technical refresh of the console soon. With slightly new hardware but then it be the PSX and PSP all over again. Till the PS4 comes we PS3 users are going to be in for a bumpy year... With regards to this actual consoles sales well i think more people would go to sony but games sales will not increase as consoles sales do...
