Update: Microsoft declined to comment on "rumors or speculation" and as such the remake remains unverified at this time.

Joystiq is reporting a bit of news sure to please early Halo adopters – a rumored remake of Halo: Combat Evolved may be heading to the Xbox 360 for a holiday release.

An undisclosed source allegedly confirmed to the outlet that the project is under way, and detailed that the game won’t simply be optimized at a higher resolution. Rather, a full visual revamp is in order, remade with entirely new art assets. Joystiq also reports that audio will remain unaltered, but that controls will be modified to allow updated schemes.

In development by Saber Interactive, the engine behind the project is unknown, but is expected to be something other than the Reach engine. Full 1080p resolution and 3D television support is rumored, as is online co-op.

Joystiq reports that the Halo: Combat Evolved remake will launch on November 15, 2011, marking the 10-year anniversary of the franchise’s debut on the original Xbox.

Not only does the release date act as a perfect tribute to the franchise first, a remake would allow fans of Combat Evolved to revisit maps no longer available due to the conclusion of Xbox online multiplayer support.

We’ve contacted Microsoft to speak to the validity of the rumor.

I am skeptical about this for 2 reason, I don't know much about Sabre Interactive and not using the Reach Engine sounds stupid. If it does turn out to be true, could be awesome running online co-op (Something KZ3 still doesn't have) on a 10 year old IP.

EDIT: VERY worried now, Sabre Interactive is the studio behind the god awful Timeshift... :S

Haven't played this game before but it seems to be known as the game that made FPS possible on consoles. So for that only I would look forward to it.

Well i have and the idea of some second rate studio making a huge cock up of it does not sit well with me. Luckily I have my original Xbox copy.

They better not dare to drench my beloved colorful Halo 1 in the pale and depressing color palette of the Halo3/Reach engine!

I'm studying graphics design, that includes color theory, so maybe I see things different. No need to get hostile though!

It went from Pastel colors to colors that look far more natural in my opinion. Good as CE looked for its time you will be hard pushed to convince me that 3, ODST and Reach didn't look better with its natural color scheme.

Who cares whether Killzone 3 doesn't have online co-op? I thought you're not even a KZ fan dude? Resistance was always the PS3's co-op FPS not Killzone, it's a miracle it even has splitscreen. I for one couldn't care less about a co-op campaign for KZ3 as the campaign is (according to reviews) the worst part of the game. I'm getting it more for the awesome (judging by the open beta I'm currently playing) multiplayer that it has.

Anyway, I'm not a big fan of the Halo colour scheme, sure it's colourful and everything, but it looks like plastic. :p

Sabre interactive is also resposible for another game which was actually good, Will Rock

a serious sam clone but a good one

Uhmm. Halo was lamented for having relatively High System Requirements but still looked like carp. Oh wait, that was the the straight Console port...... Never mind, but I still remember the game looking like carp, even though i enjoyed it for some reason.

game did look bad even for the time, but i enjoyed it a hell of a lot, i'd love to see it remade with the Reach engine

In all fairness, I have to side with Miss_FOTM on this one. What drew me to Halo1 when it first launched was the intro menu screen. The background soundtrack along with the actual halo world orbiting was ... well ... beyond this world!

The covenant remind me of the illegitimate lovechildren of ewoks and acute triangles. Their weapons and lack of ammo irritate me even more...but man, riding around on a warthog in Halo 1 was just amazing. I never felt that again. Yes, Halo reach does look better, if it didn't then there'd be something seriously wrong with it, but for it's time ... it didn't wow me as much as halo1 did.

Then again, reach did have to compare against the rest of the Motley crew of today's graphics.
