Piracy - is it a dirty word?

long recovering pirate, i stopped that the moment i got my first job, then almost fell back into it when i quit said job but still maintaining a no piracy rate.

hard? yes!

but i do enjoy buying my legal games, they just work better

Current Pirate. No Intention of stopping. You know my reasons.

This reason from the article:

What really needs to be combated, however, is the absurd sense of entitlement pervasive amongst pirating gamers. Many of these people have rationalized their piracy for so long that they actually start to believe it. It’s been said before, but I’ll say it once more: playing video games is not a right, it’s a privilege.

I used to pirate back in the day and I feel very bad about it. Like Tank I started buying games when I started getting a salary.

And people who say they can't afford games. Well if you can afford the system that you are playing it on then I'm sure you'll be able to afford Steam specials or secondhand games for consoles. I don't play new games because I reckon the price isn't justified. So I just wait for a bit and then I play it when it's a fraction of the cost.

If you absolutely have to play the latest games and can't afford it then you are falling for the hype machine and you are a sheep.

It was a good article and I agree with it completely.

I'm not perfect. I do many other things wrong. We all do. But buying a game is an awesome feeling. "Man, I finally got <insert game name here>!" *opens game and smells the newness*

I also used to copy games from my friends when I didn't have a job, but as soon as I had my own money I started buying games. I think most gamers we're pirates once, but now we have joined the Royal Navy :D

Hello.
My name is ********, and I used to steal other people's intellectual property. :o

The feeling of guilt became too much for me and I have been clean for almost 10 years now.

Gaming is an expensive hobby, but I get by trying to live within my means, not always trying to get the latest and greatest of everything and trying to the find the best games in my preferred genres at the lowest price. Legally.

I donated more than the average for the Humble Indie Bundle as I think that the developers deserve compensation for all the work they put into designing and developing software, creating and editing graphics assets and audio, designing levels, writing a script where applicable, etc. Ok well that last bit applies to all games.

Games will not be developed and published if doing so is not profitable.

That's my $8.75

I used to pirate pretty much everything, I guess this changed for 3 reasons.
As games started to move more and more online I wanted to play them so I forked out the cash.
Secondly Steam has made it much easier for me to purchase a game download and play, there is no more needing to search for patches find cracks for those patches etc etc!
Most importantly as I started being able to afford games with out needing to choose between my drinking/food money (cause as we know beer is bread), Eventually I ended up purchasing all my games.
Think the last thing I pirated was black ops, thank goodness I did, it was annoying, put down the game 30 mins in and went back to bad company 2. If I did like it I would have purchased it because I would have wanted to play it online.

You will always in life get people that sponge off the majority, leeches. They contribute absolutely nothing to society but are more often than not your most outspoken about the problems.

Pirates are nothing more than a bunch of leeches. Raven Gold for example, very outspoken but contributes nothing. Getting the pleasure without the price.

Used to pirate back in the day, almost every game was a copy. Never owned a single game, then around 1998 I started a part time job that paid quite a bit. So I started buying my games for 11 years now, it's a good feeling.

interesting philosophy

hey guys

i was a fearsome pirate as early as 1994, when the www just started. reason was there was no store where we could go buy games, and as a student i didnt have a credit card. later, as gaming evolved, i still pirated games until the online multiplayer space took off. then i started buying games for the multiplayer component. you know why i stopped pirating games??

in 2004 i was a director and shareholder in a company that had perfected an absolutely amazing piece of code - a content management system that was as good as joomla is now. in order to promote more interest from programmers, i had my team develop a CD that we handed out to budding programmers and university students with a scaled down version of the CMS for them to play with, look at the code and test their programming skills.

i got a call from a customer wanting a web page upgrade, and when we went to the site to look at it, we found that some little sh*ts had "stolen" our code and tried to make a website out of it. of course, this website was not working correctly because we had deliberately taken out some functionality.

i cannot describe the sense of anger and betrayal i felt. here we were, trying to "do good" and people were just shafting us. that evening i went out for dinner with my business partner, and told him how annoyed i felt, and how we should prosecute the offending pig that dared to steal the years of hard work, toil, sweat and thought we'd put into this.

then i tried to imagine the guys who had developed starcraft and broodwars, at the time my favourite game... and tried to imagine how they must feel after working so hard to create something that i could play and gain enjoyment from for years and years, and people just 'take it' - with no regard whatsoever.

i've never pirated a game since that day, and i never will.

i know how much work goes into software. i've seen how much work top developers do to produce a great game. i've seen how much sh*t they have to take from snot-nosed, pimply little pubescants (like the 'tard that posted how he wont quit pirating), how much whining they have to deal with just to get the balance of the game correct.

that's just me, and my opinion shaped from the personal pain of being on the receiving end of piracy.

here's the mind bender.

if EVERYONE stopped pirating games, their price would be so low that they would be totally affordable. even better, software houses would have a better cash flow, be able to throw more staff at their projects, and produce games faster (we wouldn't have to wait so long for diablo 3)!! they could spend more money on R & D and make even better games, with more technology.

so to every one of you moronic pirates out there... think about this... you're actually not scoring anything!!! you're just screwing it up for everyone else you selfish pricks.

and hey, if you can't afford a game, GET A JOB! and if you still can't afford the game and you still want it, MAKE A SACRIFICE!

/emoragequit!

I used to pirate games while I was in school and varsity, but I have stopped for the most part. Two factors contributing to this is that I can afford to buy my games now, and I don't have enough free time to play dozens of different games.

The only games on my pc that I don't own is ones that are played for lans. If I actually enjoy the game and intend to play it afterwards, I will buy it. If not, it just stays unplayed on my hard drive until the next OS reinstall. I don't delete them just in case I get to another lan and I need it again.
