How Kotick became a shareholder darling and gaming bogeyman

for gamers he's the devil incarnate, for shareholders he's a dream come true.

so both really

Typo: "Bobby has never been once to mince his words."

What I find amusing in all this is that people don't support Activision-Blizzard because of Kotick's decisions but largely because of the games people fell in love with pre-Kotick. Kotick is riding the coattails of their success and raping that success for all he can.

I have a working WoW Subscription , and guess what , im bored , i dont play it any more , i play League of Legends (FREE , I didnt even have to pay when I downloaded the thing !)

Indie games are going to murder these fat cats.
The games are fun , the prices are fantastic (FREE / Dirt CHEAP)
The amount of player input is amazing depending on the title (free maps / mods)

Im just a noob gamer whos been playing pc games since the Spectra Video > upgraded later to a XT pc with a 20 meg hard drive > 486 > pentium 1 166mhz > pentium 3 > pentium 4

Ive been around the block , and let me tell you this , companies that go greedy , charge for everything including maps and charge exuberant prices for everything , will have to hold a budget meeting in the next 10 years to discuss why their profit margin is down the drain.

I hope 100 indie companies pop up and make their own stuff without a mean funding company to break the games.

Do you know why so many games came out and why we had so much fun 1980 > onwards ?

Startup companies that write small fun games and create genre's that people never even heard of.

Activision , pucker up , im not the only gamer whos tired of your BS.

"I constantly find myself half-expecting to hear news of a wild-eyed PR manager tackling Kotick off the stage, muzzle in hand."
I LOLed

great article

'His personal best was on 15th September, 2009, at the Deutsche Bank Security Technology Conference, where he proudly proclaimed that his goal, coming in to Activision 10 years ago, was to “take all the fun out of making video games.” It was here that he outlined his business model in all its creativity-stifling glory, boasting how he changed the employee incentive program to “really rewards profit and nothing else,” going on to add that his employees “should always be aware of skepticism, pessimism, and fear,” adding finally that Activision is “very good at keeping people focused on the deep depression.”'

Did he really say that? Or is it sarcastic?

I stopped supporting Activision titles - my last purchase being Modern Warfare. The first one.

It was round about then that I started learning who Kotick is, what he stands for, and how much he pisses on the heads of the gamers below him. So I vote with my wallet. It may not mean much, but it's my statement.

In the meantime Kotick and Activision survive because there are plenty of gamers who, oblivious or otherwise, go ahead and buy the games - only to complain later that they feel they've been shafted in one way or another.

And then they bend over again when the next title gets mentioned.

Did he really say that? Or is it sarcastic?

No ... It's accurate - it's not even an out of context statement - he said it at a damn conference in front of a listening audience. The scary thing about him is that you don't even have to embellish the things he says.

true story

Don`t blame the man, blame the system of which he is just a transparent face.
Its sad though.. that people seeking escapism from the system are being exploited by the system.

.....
Makes me want to become a hermit

The fact that he can get away with that is ridiculous. Even stockholders aren't stupid enough to want that. In any other setting they'd go out of business, but they own Blizzard now, so 10,000,000 gamers paying their monthly fees and their not likely to stop any time soon.

They don't own blizzard they are just partners.

What a load of BS! At his last statement: It's not getting the attention that it deserves because it's shit! People don't want franchises that go on and on and on, you tool! That's not innovation, you greedy hillbilly.
