Is it just me, or is online gaming becoming more and more of a revolting experience? Yeah, there has always been some form of cheating etc, or some anonymous fucktard who baits people, but these days it seems to be getting completely out of hand. Every second or third gamer seems to fall into one of these categories.
I only play PC online and at that only FPS, so maybe my reference point is a bit limited, but I'm fairly certain this is prevalent across the gaming board.
Let's look at the current FPS that is popular currently. COD:BO. There is some hacking here no doubt, but the main issue with this is the level of cfg file editing. Some of the edits can be classified as hacking I suppose, but you must really see it to believe it. Guys editing so that they have no foliage. In other words, there are no bushes, shrubs or leaves anywhere. They also edit out the floating papers, leaves, dust and smoke. Then there are the mini-map edits where enemies are permanently visible on the map. Or where they edit out textures so everything appears grey and enemies CLEARLY stand out. The guys who make no noise when sprinting. There are other issues, but the most obvious must be the ability to tank. Tanking is basically absorbing enemy fire without dying, well quickly any way. You fire 5 AK rounds into a guy and three revolver rounds and oke still manages to knife you. It has made the game completely un-enjoyable, because there is no real way for these edits to be picked up by the anti-cheat system. In this case it is VAC.
I say, lock the damn cfg file. Full stop. Any settings that need to be changed or edited must be done from in game menu. Resolutions, key binds etc sure, but stop there. Otherwise it gets completely out of hand and in the end no one is playing the game after 6 months, but I don't think publishers really care, because they are releasing their games every 6-12 months anyways.
Then there is the old hacking. BC2 & MW2 were especially hard hit here. I don't play MW2 anymore and haven't for a while, so I can't comment on that, but BC2 really become unpleasant after a while. The hacking was really crazy. The SGS servers were especially hard hit and still are I think to a degree, mostly because there are no admins and the cheaters run riot. I had not played BC2 for about 2 months as I was taken in with Blops. I recently started BC2 again and I must admit, it is a far more enjoyable experience. There are still f***tards, but not nearly as bad as it used to be.
I think the anti-cheat systems are severely behind. I know they will also always fight a losing battle, because as soon as PB or VAC is updated, a few hours later a workaround has been written. But these days it almost seems as if they no longer bother writing new updates.
I don't know, I think people are simply becoming more and more brazen with anonymity. Maybe Blizzard were onto something when they wanted to introduce the system which would have your real identity linked to your account. People whined and cried and they aborted it, but if any company can call the bluff, it would be Blizzard. I mean, what an awesome experience being able to play and if some little 13 year old over steps the mark, you look who is his and call his mom! Haha, what an awesome idea.
