Using Steam in SA "unlawful" says Film and Publications board

LOL, so they will detain my internet download... at customs? :wtf:
Dude, they think that they have a digital customs. But it's a way of lying to the public... Let them think whatever they want, but we all know it that the FPB are a bunch of fscking retards and that will never change... or atleast not until they fully understand how digital distribution actually works

Someone's optimistic :p

Of course it's illegal as gravy from steam sales aren't flowing into the great beast.

God forbid the day comes when they do actually understand how digital distribution works. They'll fall off their chairs as they realize they haven't been milking it.

Woh, probably a bad idea to bring this sort of thing to the attention of the FPB. More than likely they were completely unaware of it before. All we need is some govt lackey pursing the matter for political points.

Oh some Auditor, probably said that steam is an application used to download our games and we pay for them. And here they are thinking oh well, they hold the goods in "customs" roflmao :p.

Meanwhile back in reality, it's all a legal industry and they realize that no tax is coming to them, so they wanna shut the stuff down...

I was thinking the same thing. If something happens to my Steam account I would lose it. I hope they never grasp the concept and that they stay the hell away from digital distribution.

Well ... technically speaking, they can't touch your Steam account. No matter how much legalese they throw at it. So your entire games library would still be there, you just wouldn't be able to download from it. Until you have the all clear.

The worst I can see happen here is that Steam would block us from purchasing games in this region until they have the all-clear from the FPB. Which means we go back to the stone ages where SA receives everything 3 weeks after the rest of the world.

Yay for progress!! :/

FPB: The distributors are held liable for unlawful distribution in the strict sense but South Africans who purchase games in this way are liable to have it seized by Customs upon importation into the country.
I told the bits & bytes they must go through a designated port of entry but the sneaky buggers didn't listen. :(

FPB: Applications are exempt from classification.
Steam games are applications. They even have .exe file extensions associated with windows applications.

Only media content needs to be classified which is broadly defined as “moving pictures”.

bwahahaha thanks juliass :p

First of all Steam is an app. and the games I buy from it are also apps. I install them and play them. I do not sit and watch them. So am I the only one that can read. "FPB: Applications are exempt from classification. Only media content needs to be classified which is broadly defined as “moving pictures”."

I find the approach by FPB rather archaic. There are many other aspects where authorities like the FPB have not kept up with technology or the changing landscape of electronic media.
Also worth pointing out that my games loopurchased through my Steam account. So I can download it whenever I want? So unless somehow Steam is blocked for all Saffers, I will always be able to access it and play it (again Sam).
