Upgrade to 4meg internet?

Hey guys.

I was thinking of upgrading my 384k line to a 4meg. The way I see it, pc games are becoming more dependant on the user hosting rather than a dedicated server.

Does anyone know of any great deals on 4meg? I know mweb has the line hosting and uncapped for R900? Right now I'm not sure if it is worth it but I wanted to ask if anyone else has any feedback on the 4meg line? Is it worth it? Do you notice a big difference?

Thanks

in my wallet yes.

still can't really share a 384k between 2 people, especially if one is constantly mmo player.

Hey dude,

I just upgraded mine from 384 to 4MB, and the simple answer is YES it's well worth it.

It felt like I went from 56k dial up to ADSL, absolutely amazing.

My dl speeds have shot from max 39kb/s to on average 500kb/s.

Personally, for the extra $$ I think it is worth it. Life is to short for slow internet :p

And another plus is that the chick at telkom told me they are going to be upgrading my line to 8MB soon, you may be in the same boat.

Hi there. If you wanna go uncapped 4meg (oooohhh, envious) I suggest you go with OpenWeb gold shaped. It's R738 per month for the data, excluding the ADSL line rental which is about R500 per month afaik. If you want a voice plan w/ telkom go for the closer option 1 if you do a lot of local calls on your landline. It doesn't amtter if telkom upgrade your line speed to 8Mb, your ISP will still provide it for you at 4Mb. However, a 4Mb costs the same as an 8Mb. I was on 4Mb capped with telkom, then we got upgraded, along with our data cap for no extra cost to an 8Mb line. So the line rental should be about R500. At most your total for data should be 1200 to 1300 per month.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks guys this is very helpful.

So in short it's worth it? You see what I am keen on is playing the newer games (ones that need an internet connection) with mates , even at home. That way with a 4 meg line I can have a couple of my mates jolling on my own private server.

Spooner which ISP are you with? I was thinking of going for the MWEB all inclusive package for R900

I am with WA dude. Pretty happy with them.

R900 is not to bad.

WA? Web Africa? How is your latency when playing games?

As for dedicated servers get about 40-90 depending on the game.
Its not bad hosted a few games on it and its solid friends normally get about 70-90 latency when I host.

Only problem is if someone is on mweb in the joburg area and you try to host they will have a ping of about 300+

Any ISP using the IS backbone should be okay. Personally I would go Mweb. Cheap price considering and their uncapped really is uncapped. I know you say only gaming for now, but you will start downloading more once you upgrade.

DO NOT go for any SAIX based account. They are the only ones who do not peer locally and thus all traffic between SAIX and MWEB/IS is routed internationally before coming back, hence 300ms plus latency!

Web Africa is pretty good, but even though they are peering, the Jhb and Cpt guys have had issues since Mweb did the free peering thing. So, if you live in Jhb and want to play on a Cpt server, forget it and vice versa.

Go with Mweb bud.

What does that mean? Will it bomb out on accounts that arent mweb?
Whats the best solution here then?

Basically, traffic from SAIX first goes to London or wherever via SAIX cables and then re-enters via Seacom. The reaosn for this is that Mweb made a move to make peering between ISP free. This always used to be charged for, but almost everyone saw the benefit in not charging for this as it enabled internet costs to be lowered. Telkom however refused, as they would be the biggest losers in revenue due to free peering. So now they still don't make money as they refuse to peer and traffic goes out and then back. Idiots.

Ok thanks guys!

So best call here is going for the Mweb all inclusive package?

EDIT: Update - Afrihost has come back to me and mentioned that the "gaming ports are not prioritized on the network so you may get high latencies when playing." with their 4mb bundle.

They do however mention that buying a 25gb+25gb package is unshaped and should work fine with gaming.

Any thoughts/ideas?

Also pretty good. Couple of mates use it and are very happy. I prefer the true uncapped option. Even on a 512 uncapped offering, I manage 100GB per month. So for me, I went with the Mweb option as 50GB is pretty limiting. Also remember, they reserve the right to withdraw the 2nd 25GB any time, as it is only a special offer.
