3D gaming - yay or nay?

If I could actually feel like I was in a dungeon surrounded by demons while I was playing a game I'd be uber happy. But 3D doesn't accomplish that or anything close and it's just stupid. Even 3D scenes where it sort of almost looks like something is popping out of the screen don't really look that great. Not worth the hype.

Well, the vfx headsets with the pucs was a lot better than this "3d" we have today. No not the glasses, the proper 3d virtual headset...

I've got two clan mates that are both gaming in 3D and they both rave about it. It's not for me though but you never know what the future holds.

No thanks. 3d at the cinema works cool and I enjoy that, but on a small screen for gaming, i get naar and eye strain.

I despise stereoscopy as a 3D tech.

Gives me massive headaches, and extreme eyestrain, for usage near or exceeding 30 minutes.

You guys know I'm talking from experience and my opinion is still the same: proper high resolution 2D displays beat the pants off "3D" displays. The price you pay for the equipment (LCD monitor + IR transmitter and glasses + graphics cards capable of running games in 3D mode) is simply not worth what you're getting.

The only thing that 3D gaming has done for the PC gaming community is that it's proved that there IS a need for higher refresh rates on our LCD monitors.

Stop giving us 1920x1080 LCD screens stuck at 60Hz and START giving us some 2560x1200 @ 120Hz LCD monitors!!!

As far as I know, at last year's CES, Samsung stated that they have identified the need for larger PC monitors (larger than 24") and have also realised that they need to provide higher resolutions. I'm STILL waiting for a 27" or 30" Samsung LCD monitor capable of providing a resolution higher than 1920x1200.

Screw 3D - I want the Matrix.

Just without the dying when you get killed bit. That would suck.

In all honesty though - I think 3D is a fad that needs to pass really quickly. 3D won't save a game, or immerse you any more, if the story, application and execution is crap.

As far as big screens go, not a huge fan there either ... I'm not sure whether I'll ever go bigger than 21". I played on a mate's 24" once, and it gave me a headache. Anything bigger than that is just asking for whiplash and a set of binoculars to see what's going on at the far edge of the screen.

Virtual Reality Head Mounted Display, ones i'm talking about :)

like this

THAT looks awesome. Someone tell me what that's like, please?

Or like, Dragon Age/DND style games where it reads your MIND.

i've only played heretic on it and it was really awesome. as you looked your pov went in the direction of you turning your head and you used the puc in your hand to go forward by tilting it. buttons on the puc obviously for shooting.

they are quite expensive :(, this was years ago....

I still say we've come where we need to drop graphical development a little bit and focus on story and gameplay revolutions instead. The gaming world needs a brand new ganre. Wolfenstien 3D brought us the FPS, and that was 22 years ago, when is the next TRUE revolution coming?

lol, i can't but help to agree. i think the last milestone was half life 2 and that was it. for us coming from sprites over to polygons, well quake was zomg. after that it just got refined...

Haha!
I used those!!!

My uncle actually had a complete rig way back then, after he saw it at a tech show at Kyalami.

Played Heretic for HOURS on that thing!

i've looked up the company for those, but as i've said... they are  $$$ really woudn't mind one or two proper vr head sets :)

also checked the video eyewear but geez, those aren't cheap either.
