Dedicated Physx

Hey guys. Need some advice. I have got a spare 9800gt 512MB. Do you think it would be worth while to add it as a dedicated physx card. What i mean is, would it be worth it for me to open my box and add it in and adding power cable management etc. If its gonna add 3fps i am not gonna do it. On a side note, would it maybe cause a bottleneck? should i use a GTX560 maybe?

hmmm. so much of questions. hahaha

I've read about this before. As far as I understand, the dedicated PhysX card only does the PhysX processing, so that card should be more than enough.

You obviously get considerable gains in games like Mafia II that relies quite heavily on PhysX, but otherwise, it won't really be used, I think. I couldn't play with PhysX enabled at ALL in Mafia II. That made me quite bitter because the PhysX makes a huge difference.

dedicated physx card? gts 450 should be sufficient Frank.

you don't need much more than it :)

How is your rig running still Tank? Still have those awesome 460's?

@to0kenZA: from what i have heard, is that a card like the 8800gt as dedicated physx slows down the GTX580. So i dont wanna go and slow my machine down.

Crysis2=physx???

Oh alright, well then I guess it would be a waste of money? Why get another one to do dedicated PhysX when you already have a decent Nvidia card with PhysX? I don't think it will make a big enough difference to justify. Not yet, at least. There's not enough support for fully-fledged PhysX yet.

yep 460's still running :D

they are amazing cards really :)

benches on the 560's proved one thing, i bought good, no need to upgrade for a while :)

I am not talking abot the money. I am just talking about the time. I do have the cards already and waiting. dont want it to slow my machine down and dont wanna waste my time for 3fps. Lame

I wouldn't tinker with it personally. Had a mate who had similar situation and eventually he pulled the physx card. Just wasn't worth the extra power and heat it added. Also, to me it's more that can break...

The performance gain will be marginal & only in some games.

The truth is that a large portion of the market doesn't have hw phyx, so the game devs design the games around the assumption that they can't rely on it being there. i.e. The game must work without it.

I'd try it run some (in game) benchmarks on a game know to support (most games with ragdoll physics do. HL2 I think does) it and see if it makes a difference.

I have done some extensive research on the topic since I'm also running a single-slot 9800GT with my two GTX580s. The PhysX performance that the 9800GT offers is not bad, however, when you're running two GTX580's or GTX570's you're not going to see a massive improvement by using a 9800GT for PhysX. In fact, my 3DMark11 scores are HIGHER with my 9800GT removed and physx left to "auto select" on one of my GTX580s.

When it comes to PhysX, the amount of CUDA cores is what matters. The 9800GT is currently the best single-slot solution, however, if you had the means to add a GTX280 for dedicated PhysX you would definitely see an increase over the 9800GT solution.

Your 9800GT will NOT be bottlenecking your system - however - it will not be adding much of a benefit either. It depends on what you're running for your main graphics horsepower. 2 GTX 590's, for example, will be insulted by a 9800GT to do the physX. Even in my setup, I'm running the 9800GT next to SLi'ed GTX580s simply because "I Can". What I'd REALLY like is a GTX280 - but my case doesn't have enough space inside.

I have a question i was running a GTX480 and when i put in a physX card it reduced my performance, granted i did put is a piece of junk GT220, but if the gt220 was doing the physX work should there have been a performance drop?

well what i think it could be that the gt220 is causing a bottle neck on your GTX480. Here is a video to have a look if this looks similar to your setup.

I have added a GTX460 to my rig for dedicated physx. A small problem though, everytime i try a bench or even just leave the computer on idle the computer freezes. I dont know if its maybe a driver issue or something. It is pissing me off a little sorry for the swearing but shit!

Its to do with the drivers, currently the GTX 5 series drivers are only for the 5 Series thus causing and issue for your pc, cause you have to have two sets of drivers installed to run a GTX 580 with a GTX 460, the latter being older in version number. Once they make one driver for all then it will be sorted...

Was doing some google research, although it works there are issues and currently recommend have a lower GTX 5xx for physx although performance boost in limited.

jees. Thanks for that reply. wow. I figured that, that was the problem. That sucks. think is that i dont want to buy a 5series card as i have the gtx460 to use. I also have a 9800GT that i can use but i have a feeling that bottleneck is gonna byte me.(haha byte me, get it? sorry for lame monday humour) I think i might get another GTX580 in september. Just another question quick. Do you think i will need to get another ASUS GTX580 DirectCU2 or can i just get a plain ASUS GTX580? The problem come where if i have to get another GTX580 directcu2 then i will have to get a HAF X cause it wont fit. those cards are massive.
