IPS Monitors

Hello all. I see that LG is bringing in some IPS monitors. Does anyone know if they are any good. Also another question are they any good for gaming? I know that the colour reproduction is very good with IPS but for games?

Another question, are there screens smaller than 30" with 2560x1600 res?

Nope. The message you have entered is to short.

Try the Dell U2711. It's what I've got. 27" IPS monitor - 2560x1440 resolution. It's the same panel as used in the iMac 27" but with an anti-glare coating and CCFL backlighting instead of LEDs. It's the best monitor I've ever owned. Period.

and what would the price be on that bad boy? Do you use it for gaming cause that is all i am going to use it for.

IPS - in plane switching.

The monitors have much better colour reproduction at angles (you can only view 1 pixel at a time at 90degrees) than twisted node (normal monitors)

They are generally a lot more expensive but are absolutely beautiful. in gaming though, the slower response time and sometimes lower contrast can be bad.

So you have to justify it and test out games on the specific monitor.

That said, I would buy NEC first, then maybe a dell, then maybe apple...

Errr...I'd prefer not to say how much it cost because it was rather expensive, still less than R9000 though. I imported it through the good guys at ZAPS because Dell South Africa was useless. However, you can also get it through Dion Wired (special request needed).

I use it mostly for gaming. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Some people online stated it has "lag" - I honestly don't know what they're talking about, it works fine. Just make sure you have a beefy graphics system because the resolution is demanding on games.

Is the GTX580 fine for graphics? See the thing is that i want a new screen for the new system i have but i dont really know what i want. I have a Samsung 23" LED at the moment. I dont know if i want to go for a 120hz for smoother graphics (not 3D, well not yet anyway) or for maybe that Dell that you are talking about. But thank you for the advice.

At that resolution the monitor will not lag but you may need to double up on the 580s.

The two issues are colour reproduction consistency (IPS helps this) and smoothness of the monitor in production of changing images (higher frequency helps this)

Most gamers would like both but you will find that there are only one or two that do this (Mitsubishi).

If you go 2560 x 1600 you will find that a 120hz monitor will not help due to you having video lag before the monitor even processes it. The monitor will also make your movie and video watching pretty unpleasant so only consider this if you are an avid gamer.

My opinion is that IPS will be the better choice. The colour will be brilliant in gaming (you sacrifice a little response time), the movies will look amazing, your photoshop, etc will be great and you will have a nice viewing angle.

I'd like to add, from experience, that ONE GTX580 is fine for playing at 2560x1200 in most games with all the settings to max. Remember, at that resolution you don't need a lot of AA in your games - so you can afford to turn down Anti-Aliasing settings which in turn frees up performance.

I had two GTX 280's in SLi and I ran Bad Company 2 at FULL settings with some AA at well over 60fps. So a single GTX580 will be just fine.

Getting a second GTX580 is just gravy for a number of other reasons, but it's NOT a "must-have".

That is why i said "over..." as their other hardware can be improved upon.

The 580 is a great card, no doubt about that. Was just showing that it can work at those resolutions.
