Get the 6990 if you can afford it, AMD's dual cards are beast. I bought the 5970 (5870x2) close to its release and I intend to skip the 6000/500 series of cards (probably the gen after that), it still stomps everything I throw at it. You future proof yourself quite well in the sense you will be playing everything on max for a long time to come, but that's to be expected with the price the flagship cards go for.

No. The 5970 does consist of two 5870 GPU's.

Edit: I'm also skipping this generation, interested to see what the 7xxx range and 6xx range from both camps will offer.

hmmm.... nvidia are tops for me atm. The 580 has much more consistent performance over the AMDs. Yeah the AMDs are capable of much higher fps, they often experience drops way below the 580s drops.

I agree. The GTX 580 is the card to go for. I could just be saying this cause i have one.

I think I have finally decided to go for the 580. Through a friend in our clan, I can get the card plus a 900w PSU for R5400 without VAT. I think that's a bargain.
