AMD 6970 vs 6990

It's AMD's whole new series weird number changing thing. It is a little confusing and a little strange as to why the decided to bother with the new series numbers. Why not stick with the old, makes it easier for people in general.

But yes, 6870 replaces the 5830 and 5770, while the 6950 replaces the 5850. The second numeral is just basically one higher. A bit silly.

Anyways, I agree with Nemesis, no need to go GTX580 SLI, it is totally overkill. I don't actually see the point of doing it (Besides the obvious), to get a few more FPS's

Good choice, although it seemed like you were keen on that 6990. What PSU are you getting with the 580?

Huntkey 900w PSU. Yeah I was very keen on the 6990, but then I thought about it and it would've probably been overkill and I'd rather save the extra money to get that i7. The 580 seems like a really good choice.

580 sure looks beast. I am actually plotting whether I should get one myself. Geese and not less that two days ago I was pretty much set on the AMD option.

Is that PSU modular?

you wont be sorry. I am very happy with mine. Have not had a single days problem. Mine is just huge.

The main thing you want from your psu is high wattage on your 12v rail(s), long warranty, 80plus certification, good safety mech., ppv and good consistency.

Brands i usually stick with:
Corsair (use mostly seasonic manufactured)
Seasonic
XFX
Thermaltake
Antec

And still overkill imho. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

True story. Downside to high-end SLI/Crossfire setups is the requirement for an insanely powerful, and overclocked, CPU. So you spend like R12k on the GPUs, but then have to spend another R4k on the CPU, R3k on the mobo (for overclocking) and R4k on really decent cooling. And then the PSU, which is like another R2k for a good 850W+ PSU...

something like my rig. I am going to be running SLI again soon on 2x GTX580's. Bulletstorm lags a bit. 60 FPS but then drops to 30 FPS for a second. that really sucks.
