dragon age 2 - worth it?

hey guys

i'm a huge fan of the classic rpg, played all the bioware games, baldurs gate, nwn etc.

i was hugely eager for dragon age, but when i got it i found that i just didn't have the addiction level to get past lvl 8 or so... the story was interesting but just 'too much' if there's such a thing in a story line. i never got anywhere near finished with it, and i must also comment that i found the game incredibly difficult (and i'm too proud to lower the game difficulty setting :P)

is dragon age 2 worth getting? or is it like nwn2 was - different story same engine and nothing new. i don't want to blow a few hundred bucks on this if its not worth doing, but i have an itch that needs scratching (in a gaming sense you sickos) :P

i really, really, reaaaaaaallllllly need an rpg to get fixated on!!!

If you didn't like DA1 then you will not find what you looking for in DA2, its more console like, so yeah none of the classic RPG stuff in there.

Um too be honest...I think your money can be better spent. Especially if you didnt like Dragon Age 1. Like Scooby said, this is no where near a "classic RPG". Although the Witcher 2is not really a classic RPG either I think your money would be better spent there. The classic RPG genre has died a bit over the years due to companys trying to cater to both PC and console platforms.

Haha you guys should have went and read the official DA2 thread. Most people that did not like the first DA loved the 2de one.
Da2 is money well worth spend. But if you don't want it right now just wait a few months it will soon hit the classic bin.
The rpg your discribing is dying out, better get with the times.

Bargain bit it dude. It is a fun game and all but you can't call it a proper RPG.
It is repetitive and at points just plain boring...
I loved DAO, I've played through DA2 twice and I'm still not a fan ... (I completed DAO 3 times. Once with every class :D )

No, DA2 is money well worth spent if you are a part of the dumbed down gaming community that's looking for cheap thrills, flashy action sequences and fast paced gaming. It plays far too much like an action game, and is nowhere close to being a classic RPG. At times I was fighting with a tank, fully armoured, wielding a massive greatsword, yet I was able to deal 3 blows and do a backflip every second. There is almost no strategy involved, and you can basically play as a rogue and spam attack and still beat the game easily.

The role-playing element is also completely raped, and any decisions you make in the game won't really feel at all significant. Characters all resemble cardboard cutouts more than actual people you can interact with.

And the story sucks.

If you must, buy this second hand and sell it afterwards. Most disappointing 40 hours of my life.

Spot on here! I think the attempt to cater to console market is this game's downfall. I love Origins and played through it a few times, but I could only complete DA2 once, and even then I found myself going "is that IT?!" The game feels overly cartoony, combat is flashy but seriously dumbed down and the big kicker, it has none of the interactivity with party members, and depth of dialog that you would know from NWN, Baldurs Gate etc, even Origins......

It's fun but feels like a macdonalds burger versus the great steak of some other RPG titles....the taste is gone very quickly.

Just because it's currently not in vogue, doesn't mean we should get with the times. I defy anyone to find a better game than Baldur's Gate 2. Hopefully with the success of Witcher 2, companies will see it's worth it to develop games exclusively for the PC and we will start getting some more classic RPGs. I understand not every1 likes them, but games like DA2 are kinda like a cheaper hooker...it's worth it for a cheap thrill but you won't remember it next week. :-D best metaphor I could come up with at 7am! :-D

Well said Cobalt. Love the "cheap hooker" analogy...quite fitting really. As iterated in this thread, if you did not like DA1 on account of too "muchness" then DA2 might fit the bill. Less classic RPG elements and more...something...call it 3rd person action - I cannot really peg it, but most die hard RPG gamers did not like it.

The game is not bad in the classical sense, but...well, it's just meh if you liked old school RPG's like NW, BG, Planescape etc.

Give the game a shot, might surprise you.

Thanks guys, I've been sitting on the fence myself for quite a while after thoroughly enjoying DAO. Now I'll wait until another RPG comes my way.

Definately Witcher 2, and hell, if you havn't played The Witcher 1, grab that off steam first. You won't be disappointed :)

I'd love to play Witcher but the adult theme is something I detest in games. I see absolutely no purpose in it. (Not intending to start a war here, just stating why I haven't tried it yet.) Needless to say I was a bit surprised even in DAO, although that was still bearable. Thanks for the advice though guys!

I hear you, the adult theme is mainly evident in dialog, however u can avoid "most" of the sexual related conversations and interactions. Pity there is no way to turn it off, otherwise you may really enjoy it. It is becoming more evident in games lately, even mainstream titles, DAO, Mass Effect etc

DA2 is a passable game, but sadly not something you'd normally expect from a company like Bioware.

Hi guys,

I played through DA, yet didn't get past the first hour of DA2. I find it difficult to explain why - the possible reasons have all been mentioned here before - but i would advise that if DA was not your cup of tea, DA2 will be a waste of time.

Witcher is a good option, however, with your dislike of mature content perhaps something like Fable III, also out now on pc.

Yeah, if it had a switch off function it'd be great. However, I suppose quite a a significant number of people purchase it for the mature content too, so they probably see no purpose in such an option.

@Leadfoot, thanks for suggesting Fable III, I had actually forgotten about that game. Will look into it!

IMHO: I don't think Dragon Age 2 is worth the hour I struggled with it's controls.

It was really just annoying upon annoying upon irritating, and add a dash of stupid.

I can't tell you if the story is any good, because I didn't get to even pay attention to it at all - what with just dealing with the controls all the time.

DA2 is nothing like DA:O . That might be a pro and a con. If you didn't like DA:O because the story was "dragging" and the combat was "slow" , then you might actually like DA2 . Combat is now pretty much "hack and slash" as opposed to DA:O's more "pause, give commands , be tactical" feeling.

The story has devolved into an episode of Egoli , rather than some "epic, save the world" thing. In other words : You can just hack and slash and forget about the plot.

There's almost zero party micromanagement left. You can't even change your party member's armor , only your own. They might as well have made DA2 a solo character RPG with some henchmen [like guildwars] .

The main bad part with DA2 is the lazy re-use of zones/areas . So instead of having all these new areas opening up as you progress, you will be stuck in the exact same town for the entire game. To drive this home: You will literally fight the "end battle" in the exact same spot where you start the game (after the prologue) . DA2 feels very "shallow" compared to DA1 , which also means at the same time, you'll most likely finish it and go "was that it?" .

What's worse, and i'm comparing to The Witcher 2 now. The Witcher 2 has a little slummy town called Flotsam. This little town has more "life" and "activity" and exploration to it than the entire city of Kirkwall. Flotsam is only a 3rd of The Witcher 2 , whereas Kirkwall is the -entire- Dragon Age 2. Kirkwall is a dead, empty city , and that is how DA2 will feel at the end...

If you're looking for a deep complex game with tactical combat and fine tuning of each character in your group and a enthralling plot with a ton of exploration....sorry Dragon Age 2 is not it.
