Which laptop should I get?

what are you going to be using the laptop for? any specific specs you want it to have? Any specific size screen you want?

Work and games, movies, etc. Looking for one that has either an ati 5650 1gb graphics card or nvidia gt540m 1gb graphics card and processor would be i5 (minimum). 15.6' screen is perfect for my needs.

its between Acer TravelMate 5742G-484G64Mn or Gigabyte Notebook 2nd Generation Intel Core 9WQ2532N-250EZA

Mecer has a slower CPU which takes it out

Only know acers so I would be biased and go for the acer they pretty much got similar specs except Gigabyte has USB 3 and doesnt say if Acer does also.

The Acer has bluetooth 3.0 but only usb 2.0 and also the Acer has a i5 480m (2.66ghz) and the gigabyte has sandybridge i5 2410m (2.3ghz)

get a gaming/movie desktop... and a netbook or the such for portable work.

Trying to get the best of both at your price level is a waste.

There's really no point in looking at USB3 Specs unless all your external drives run off of it already
The speed increase copying to a USB3 external drive is still marginalyl hgher even through a stock USB2 Port, al of that is negligable though if the rest of the laptop doesn't meet specification standards.

I would personally go for the Acer but I do think the Gigabyte has potential as a failry decent all rounder

What do you mean by that?

A computer (any computer) is only as fast as it's slowest/weakest component.

You could have the best CPU in the world, if your Motherboard (and by extension, north- and south-bridge busses) suck, the whole computer sucks. The CPU would not be able to perform as it should.
Same goes for every single component in the build.

You can't just slap a Ferrari engine in an Uno's body and expect it to perform.
The wheels, chassis, and everything else wouldn't be able to cope.

Either way you say or do it though, with a R7k budget, you're guaranteed to have at least 1 or 2 such weak components in the laptop.
Either you dosh the R15k+ for a good and proper gaming laptop - or you build a desktop - or you set yourself up for disappointment.

I mean that there is no use in having a USB3 Interface on a laptop if the CPU or RAM are not able to make full use of the speeds allowed by USB3
PC's are imperfect, they always have a bottleneck, the trick is to identify which part of the laptop in this case will be the bottleneck and then analyze what type of impact it will have on your expected usage.

I rate get the Acer TravelMate 5742G-484G64Mn, its got good features and i think it will be the best buy for the cash you willing to spend, otherwise if you want a pc/laptop for home use (meaning the laptop will mostly be staying at home) then get yourself a pc.

The Acer comes with Windows 7 Professional 32bit, what are the advantages of 64bit over 32bit because the Gigabyte comes with Windows 7 Professional 64bt?

you should be able to switch them out.

64bit is able to address more memory and larger data sets. If you have 4GB or more of ram, you need 64bit.

Does not really matter whether it is 32bit or 64bit that it comes with cause you could just reinstall the OS when you get it to 64bit. The Win7 keys work for 64bit and 32bit.

So choose the Laptop you want between those two and just reinstall with 64bit if its the Acer you want!

k thanks. Just want to ask another question. Will the GT540M 1GB Graphics card run better/faster on i5 2410m (sandybridge) or i5 480m?

One would have to consider a few variables
Motherboard bus speeds, internal connection methods, power supply voltages
I think the difference would be negligible though, those mobile GFX cards are the same as their full sized counterparts, not really all that dependent on the CPU for actual calculations
